The Building Block Dress STRIKES AGAIN!!
Actually, this was our 2nd dress sewn {you can see the others HERE and HERE}, but due to a “photographer error”, the photos had to be retaken {and, the “photographer aunt” is still not happy with the results – trust us, the fabric is LOVELY in person}.
Gladly, we weren’t on any time crunch . . . .and only had to convince EA that we had to take a few photos again.
She’s a tough one, but ultimately accepted it was “my fault”, not “hers”.
We {once again} sewed a size 5 dress, but used the pattern pieces that Liesl provided in our SAGA classes {prior to the release of the actual book}.
This is important to note because we didn’t modify the sleeve – however, when comparing them with the finished pattern pieces from the book, we noticed Liesl added some length to the original pattern piece.
So, please know that if you sewed this version of the Building Block Dress, your sleeve would finish slightly longer than this one.
We think it was a good call, because attaching the notched cuff got a little bit tight on the size 5. . .
We sewed this dress in Liberty – the first time we’ve sewn a complete dress in Liberty {excluding the collar and cuffs}. This piece was actually bought two years ago, during our time at the SAGA conference. So, we thought it was a fitting fabric to use as a tribute to that entire conference, workshop, etc.
Again, we can’t say enough good things about The Building Block Dress. It’s a phenomenal resource for any sewist, and one we look forward to using time and time again . . .
Unfortunately, we are now turning to “stash busting” – something we’ve talked about entirely too long, yet something we haven’t acted upon.
Well, this Fall / Winter is IT!! We’ve officially made SOME. SORT. OF. LIST. of patterns and fabrics to use for each. It’s lengthy, and doubtful that we’ll make it through all the garments. But, it’s a plan.
The good news: Stash will be used AND money will be saved.
The bad news: It may not be 100% “Frances Suzanne style”.
We think we’ve decided on some cute {or at least “workable”} combinations, but will be excited to return to the fabric store once many of these garments are completed!!
Such a pretty and sweet dress!!!
Thanks, Rachel!
I love this dress-such a classic. I toyed with the idea of buying the book, but convinced myself to wait. We just moved into our new house, and all my fabric is still in totes in the garage! After an almost complete 2 year break from sewing, I still can’t get back into it. It seems life has taken over and sewing has taken a back seat:( Fun to see what you 2 are creating though! So thanks for the inspiration!
We miss seeing your creations . . . but, are so glad you are enjoying LIFE, FAMILY, ETC!! The photos of your family {and new house} look lovely. I know you are so grateful to have the building process / move behind you. What a feat!
Oh, I love how classic this one is! Such a gorgeous fabric, for such a pretty girl! As an aside, I love how the book says to finish the cuffs … such a simple, clever solution for keeping it neat.
Thank you, Charity!! The book is phenomenal, isn’t it???
It really has a lot going for it!
Very pretty and what an obliging model!
That’s not always the case . . . so, we were indeed THANKFUL!
Hello ladies; kids are tough about adult mistakes, aren’t they? So glad that Niece Major was willing to give the photographer a second chance. The dress is very pretty, and the collar will look very sweet outside a cardigan as the weather cools. Completely understand about stash!! I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with what you sew – especially with the Building Block book to inspire you.
Happy Halloween.
RE: Stash busting: We hope so!! Our sewing has slowed tremendously these past months, but our list continues to grow, grow, grow {as do our nieces . . . .and their “need” for new clothes}!
