Recently, we started doing some “Tales of…THE BIN” posts. In the first one, we mentioned a particular photo shoot “emergency” and how we went to “the bin” to solve the problem.
And, here is the dress we found for EA to wear on family photo day.
We’ve all had times we’ve looked back on life and wondered, “What was I thinking?”. Some of us more often than others.
There was a time in my life when I only lacked three classes to finish a second degree in mathematics. Three PAINFUL classes. Which meant I needed a “no thought” project when I wasn’t cramming. Enter the practically never-ending, monotonous, diamond, geometric, sewing project.
So, what was I thinking? Check out the gorgeousness of this pattern in its original form {source: AS&E, Issue 26}: the Titania…
I guess I was thinking: I didn’t need to think. Diamonds, diamonds and more diamonds. Smock, don’t think. Don’t get me wrong, my creation is nice and was time-consuming, but WOW at the original in all its splendor and glory.
Fortunately, EA loves the dress (and the twirl factor) and is none the wiser about the dress in its original form. She actually has self-proclaimed this to be her “Cinderella dress”. And there is no greater compliment from a four year old, am I right? And although EA likes to call it her “Cinderella Dress” {this is the 2nd one she has given this title}, it might be more aptly called a “Thankful Dress” by us!!
You see, not only did EA wear this dress for the family photos, but it also came in handy on Easter when we didn’t have her Easter dress completed. And, then there was her violin recital….when her Easter dress STILL wasn’t complete.
So, we find ourselves extremely thankful to have pulled this creation out of “the bin”, and for it to get lots and lots of wear over these past few months!!
While we are enjoying the dress we have, maybe one day we’ll find time to sew the dress as it was intended!
Now, to get that Easter dress completed….
Really? Yours is so much nicer. I was admiring the perfect geometrical pattern and the texture created on the plain fabric. So much so that I actually winced when I saw the original (taste is a funny thing, so personal). For me the horizontal bands and the gold spoils that lovely diamond quilted appearance.
Keep it for sure! It’s perfect in itself.
Awww, thanks Shelley!! This dress has saved us on a number of occasions this spring / summer {and EA’s acceptance of it is a BIG BONUS!}.
Beautiful, beautiful work!!
Thank you, Allison!
I could not imagine handstitching something like that! It is absolutely beautiful. Well done and so glad EA is getting so much use from it.
You may do it yet . . . And, yes, we are soooo thankful for “the bin” and the timeliness of this dress!!
The dress is just beautiful and it is wonderful that you have three little princesses who will take turns wearing it. (Maybe others, too, someday.) It is a true heirloom!
We are definitely glad it was pulled from “the bin” for the 1st niece!! And, yes, with 3 girls . . . it may be worn to bits by the end of our nieces’ span through the dress.
It’s gorgeous! I love the texture that all of the diamond smocking creates- it fits perfectly with your word for the year, even though it was sewn less recently. =)
You’re right, Charity – it is definitely textured!! Maybe this should be our word for the century??
