Who Would Win? Bleach vs. Fabric

Oliver + S, Jump Rope Dress

My 1st grade students LOVE the “Who Would Win?” series by Jerry Pallotta.

Oliver + S, Jump Rope Dress

Love. love, love them . . . and beg for other competitions to be written.

Oliver + S, Jump Rope Dress

These books are highly engaging and thought provoking for the elementary student.  They definitely tap into higher order thinking, and I love hearing student reasoning for the pros and cons of the animal traits as each prepares for battle.

So, as luck would have it, we had a sewing “Who Would Win?” with a recent project of our own.

Who would win? Bleach vs. Fabric

Oliver + S, Jump Rope Dress

You see . . .As we sewed EA’s jump rope dress, we sewed CL a “view A” Oliver + S, Jump Rope Dress version as well. You know we like to work in pairs when sewing particular patterns . . .

This dress reminded us a lot of her “shafari dress“, and we knew it would become one she would wear often.

Unfortunately, she was able to wear the dress once before some nasty old bleach {or so we think} ate away at the fabric – leaving a trail of holes in its wake!

What a mess!!

We still aren’t exactly sure how it all went down, but the evidence suggested it was bleach.

The only items salvageable were the vintage buttons.

You win some, you lose some . . . but man, next time we hope the bleach will choose a “quicker sewing project” to attack!

Do you have any sewing “Who Would Win?” tales of your own?

The only other one that comes to mind for us would be: Who Would Win? Sewing Machine Needle vs. Finger.

Oliver + S, Jump Rope Dress

Yeah, I bet you could guess the winner on that one too . . .

Oh how sad. The dress was just beautiful as is this niece. I had a similar thing happen when my children were small. My husbands sister had been to England and brought me back a length of Liberty of London fabric to make something for my daughter. Back then their fabric came 32 inches wide. I wanted to smock her something for her third birthday but the width of the fabric was being a challenge until I found a Children’s Corner pattern that buttoned down the front, I don’t remember the name of it. The fabric was a dream to work with and I had so much fun sewing it up. I made a Bubble for her 6 month old brother that I also smocked and luckily I had their portraits taken before her birthday. She had wanted a chocolate cake but due to allergies I could not make it with dairy or eggs and I made a crazy cake, the one you mix in the pan with vinegar, water and oil. I think that was the problem, the vinegar. She got a large amount on her dress. No matter what I did, how I treated it I could not get that stain out. I must have worked on it for a month trying every tip anyone gave me. Of course this was before the internet. Finally in desperation I threw it in with a load of whites that I was bleaching. It minimized the stain to a great degree but it also completely bleached out the beautiful print. All the hours I had spent smocking and assembling that dress in my once in her childhood Liberty fabric for one wear.

Seam ripper vs Fabric, Iron vs Fabric, Scissors vs pin, Rotary cutter vs finger, Iron vs FLoor. I think I am an accident waiting to happen!

I’ve had some run-ins with bleach myself, but thankfully it’s been confined to quick sews. My personal nemesis is dry-erase markers vs fabric. I really like the light floral details on this dress- so sad that it was a one-wear only dress!

Beautiful dress! I am so sorry it was ruined! Smocked dress with loads of bullion roses vs. Serger. Although I repaired the dress, I couldn’t stand to look at it! My daughter never wore it and I gave it away,
