Who says you have to have all of your “school supplies” on the 1st day of school??
Well, maybe you should have your supplies, but . . .
Poor CL. She’s the “one in the middle” . . . our most gracious “client”, yet the one that finds herself getting LOTS of handmade-me-downs and not many things to truly call her own.
Enter: another rendition of “Backpack Sewing” . . .
We never look forward to sewing backpacks. Give us dresses and skirts ANY DAY!! Yet, a backpack is “worn” and showcased 5 days a week . . .and is an integral part of a child’s school wardrobe.
Last year, we sewed both EA and CL a backpack using Made by Rae’s Toddler Backpack.
For EA’s first backpack {and the one she is continuing to use this year}, we added 2 inches height and width – trying to account for folder storage in the main compartment.
It was a bit tight, and “Sister Momma” utilized the outer pocket for folder storage instead.
For CL’s first backpack, we kept the original size and added a few pockets of interest. This one is still used daily – just in another capacity {as an errand running, on-the-go, diaper bag for LG}
So, gleaning from these two creations, we opted to add 3 inches in height and width for CL’s new backpack. The extra space has given ample room for folder storage and other items needed for the school day. The girls have enjoyed the extra pockets and storage areas that we added, so we kept those features for Backpack #3.
Granted, this backpack didn’t make a school appearance until close to Halloween, but we are currently celebrating the fact that it DID make a school appearance this year!
The completion of the backpack meant we could finally turn our attention to the “Fall / Winter Sewing List” – and man, it’s a long one! And, as many of you may remember – one that involves some “stash busting.”
Game on!! Let the list commence . . .
Oh, she’s so cute! I love the fabrics you used for this backpack.
Thanks! We actually made a decision pretty quickly at Joanns that day. Shockingly so . . .especially for anyone that has ever fabric shopped with us could vouch on our S.L.O.W. decision making skills.
