Happy Thanksgiving, one and all!
We veered from our “normal, sewing with solids” for a FUN outfit for Thanksgiving!
It’s not every day you can wear tepees . . . well, truth be told, EA will probably wear this creation well past Thanksgiving and quite possibly again next Thanksgiving.
We found this fabric when Hancocks was going out of business . . .and we decided we’d figure out what to do with it “later”.
“Later” came quickly enough!
We sewed the Oliver + S, Hopscotch Skirt: size 5, with size 6 length {3/4″ added}.
As with most Oliver + S patterns, EA tends to fit in a smaller size of the skirts than the dresses and tops. Yet, we didn’t account for that in this sewing. We always question our measurements, and want to “make sure it fits”.
“Go big, or go home!” Are we right?
One of the most interesting features of this pattern is the cute, “Chinese take-out pockets”. The last time {only time} we’ve sewn this pattern, we had an “interesting” take on the pocket detail. So, this time, we opted to do another ” interesting” detail: TEPEES.
By adding a straight stitch {using navy DMC floss} along the lines of the pocket, we recreated a larger tepee – similar to the printed design on the fabric.
The photoshoot itself wasn’t without a story of its own! We got the grand idea to use one of EA’s Granddaddy’s arrowheads to 1) entertain EA and 2) to create a more “authentic” Thanksgiving look.
Our departing words to him?
“We’ll take GOOD CARE of your arrowhead!”
But, then SOMEONE decided to go “bear hunting”. . .
And threw the arrowhead in the climatic moment of her pretending.
SERIOUSLY?!?!!?
Uh oh. PROBLEM.
BIG PROBLEM!!
After clearing a LARGE patch of ground cover, EA was at the point of giving up. Yet neither one of us wanted to tell Granddaddy what had happened.
The only time I snickered through the search was imagining NOT finding the arrowhead . . .and hundreds of years later someone stumbling upon it, and thinking he/she had found an archaeological site!
The arrowhead was eventually found, and returned to Granddaddy!
QUICKLY!
Needless to say, another arrowhead photoshoot is not scheduled anytime in our near future.
And, for that matter, we’ll have to think long and hard before using ANY prop!
This one is so cute. Making the larger tepees on the pockets was the perfect final touch. I have an arrowhead sitting on my bar next to me that I found buried in the yard of a previous house we owned. We also found numerous fossils there also. If one of my grandchildren lost any of them I have to say I would just laugh it off. I like to let them handle them and examine them. Not that I let them be irresponsible, but in the end they are just things.
Oh, there was a LOT of laughing about it . . . with a shake of our heads. I should have snapped a photo of the cleared, circular area around “the event!” A healthy dose of fear {and responsibility} is good for this child! And, for the record – her Grandaddy wasn’t worried about it, in the least!
So funny, and of course you know I love the skirt!
Doesn’t that go without saying – hence, your name :)!
Oh no, I held my breath whilst I read that post. I am so glad you found it and what a fun skirt.
Such drama . . . always :)!
Riveting story! Funny and perfect for those “remember when” family story occasions. She’s grown up so much this year. But as sweet and photogenic as ever. I love this very simple and effective outfit.
Thanks Tamara! Yes . . .she is indeed growing up – SO QUICKLY!
EA is looking so grown-up in these photos! I’m relieved that the arrowhead was found at last! I like the added detail of the stitching on the pockets. =)
Just a little pizzazz to an already wonderful skirt!
