The “Sewing for Disney: Mulan” outfit might be considered a “selfish sew”.
Mulan’s character is a personal favorite.
Not that the movie hasn’t been enjoyed by the nieces . . .
But sometimes enjoyment is skewed by trying to please those around you.
For instance, EA has been claiming that Mulan is one of her top 3 Disney Princesses. However, upon asking her more about why she likes Mulan so much, the truth came out during the photo shoot: BECAUSE YOU DO!
Ummmmm. OOOPS!
Still, EA loves the fact Mulan uses her brains over her strength, and is extremely clever.
And, she is pleased with Mulan’s dress as well.
So, even though views and opinions were slanted in my favor on this sew, everyone was pleased with the result!
We sewed a Rock the Stitch, Fawn Lily dress {sz 4T, “below knee” length with an additional 1″}.
This is a pattern that has always intrigued us, and one we have wanted to sew for some time. The lines on the pattern are unique, fresh, and interesting!
While preparing to sew the dress, we posted a picture on Instagram of our color selection . . . seeing if anyone could determine our Disney character of choice.
Thankfully, someone “saw” Mulan in these colors, giving us the confidence to proceed with our plans.
We love the color-blocked look of the dress, and the paired colors are a striking combination. Unfortunately, we did not meet Mulan during our trip to Disney. The lesson learned from this: she frequents Epcot, but not the Magic Kingdom!
Since we had never sewn this dress before, we made the process a bit harder than it should have been – ie: not placing the flat piping on the correct pieces in order for it to be more continuous.
And, yes . . . we WILL sew this pattern again!! It’s definitely a keeper!!
The dress is so sweet – love the colour blocking and the piping looks good to me, not sure what you mean about that it could be more continuous. Mulan is C’s favourite too.
We basically attached the flat piping to the wrong pieces. If we had attached it to the interior of the sleeve area {instead of the outside of the yoke and skirt pieces}, it would have continued around the shoulder/neck area. Understand? It just wasn’t as “clean” as we like to sew. NOT THE PATTERN FAULT . . .just something we didn’t think through thoroughly!
This dress is really beautiful. I love that piped bodice.
Thanks so much!
Mulan is a personal favorite of mine as well!!! My kids don’t get it….YET. At least that is what I tell myself :). Love the dress, that pattern is fantastic!
Yes, we agree!! Great, unique pattern . . . and one we look forward to sewing again.
Thank you so much for choosing the Fawn Lily to make this awesome Mulan dress. I love it; the colors are perfect!
Thanks Rebecca!! We’ve admired this pattern for some time now, and thoroughly enjoyed “giving it a go!” Beautiful design . . .
I love those colors together! The Fawn Lily pattern is a favorite of mine- those lines are truly unique and the pattern is very well-made!
Thanks! It was definitely a combination we wouldn’t have put together . . . without a little help from Mulan :)!
