Merida was quite possibly the last Disney Princess introduced to the girls before heading to Disney. And, her character / story line immediately became a “niece favorite.”
Maybe it was the accent. Maybe it was the spunky personality. Or maybe it was the fact she was a princess with a weapon . . . that fought BEARS!!
*And, that she was extremely good with said weapon.
Whatever the case, EA has deemed Merida as her favorite of the Disney princesses – demoting “Queen Elsa” who had remained #1 for far too long.
But, how to make a “Disney Inspired” outfit of Merida for the warm summer days ahead??
Think about it: Poor Merida!
All that hair.
The heavy dress. Ugh.
She’s got to be “BRAVE” to survive Disney summers!
We decided to sew KNIT . . . our one and only knit creation of the trip . . .for our Sewing for Disney: Merida outfit.
Using the Oliver + S, Hopscotch Dress, we sewed a sz 5 {with 1″ added in length}. Fold Over Elastic {FOE} was used for finishing the neckline.
And, then assistance was needed for the MAIN COMPONENTS of the dress. . .
THE ARROW and TARGET
We know NOTHING about this sort of stuff, so we called in an “expert.” After giving Tonya the unsewn {but cut} pattern pieces and discussing color options, she used Siser brand, heat transfer vinyl and cut the images on a Cricut. Then, she applied the cut images to the dress with a heat press.
After the arrow {image found HERE} and target {image found HERE} were attached, we were free to sew the dress per the pattern instructions.
This creation was super easy for us . . .just a little computer design for the target and arrow, pass it off to an expert, and then sew as directed.
Forgive us as we digress, but: BEST CHARACTER INTERACTION OF OUR TRIP!
ANTS and AUNTS can be sooooo confusing {note: EA’s smack on the forehead}!!
Still, one must “step lively . . . step lively. . . “
Oh, and for the record, the dress was “EA approved”.
100%.
Let’s just say, it seemed to empower her, and bring out her “Inner Merida”.
Enough so, she “led” the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train on this round . . . .
Great photos and story! Love the Merida outfit, clever and creative “ants”!
Way to throw in that pun :)!! *We were just tickled to capture the “face palm” of EA during the discussion . . .
So very, very good! Love this series to pieces…
YEA!!! Sooooo glad . . . . we are probably going to be sad when it is over ourselves! Of course, CL has already requested another “Disney inspired” outfit, using a character that we didn’t give a “nod” to . . .
Love your interpretation and the interaction with the characters!
Thanks, Emily! Hope your trip is as memorable as ours was . . .
What a cute dress! Love the gold! Merida is my favorite too, especially since I have a daughter who is just like Merida both in looks and personality.
WOW . . .you are so right!! Your daughter could be Merida’s sister :). Have you thought of an upcoming Halloween costume, by chance??
I LOVED reading this!! Ok – first off. She looks so adorable in that dress, and I love that Merida is her new fave princess! Such a cute movie for Moms and daughters alike, and one that teaches girls to be brave and strong (and learn to respect their parents – HA!). Secondly, I really need to try heat transfer vinyl already! I keep thinking about trying it, but for some reason continue to go back to fabric paint and stencils. How did you like using the vinyl? Looks like you had a blast on this trip
Well, we were “chicken”, and passed the vinyl off to a friend {that knows what she is doing} to do! EA loves, loves, loves her “empowering dress . . . it definitely brings out the spunk!
Oh, how fun! I love the green, and that golden binding!! What a great idea to collaborate on the vinyl. =) That forehead-smack is adorable!
We were THRILLED we caught it in action!! That whole “interaction” was priceless from beginning to end. Many times, with other characters, the girls stood frozen – completely enamored and speechless for the most part.
Your version is awesome!! My teen has dressed up like Merida (and she is a red headed archer). http://www.falafelandthebee.com/2013/08/28/i-made-a-costume-and-it-isnt-even-halloween-yet/
Your nieces are adorable.
You sewed “the REAL DEAL” . . .for a present-day Merida!! I believe Merida’s character could have been based off your beautiful daughter!! What a magical memory that your daughter helped give someone else – makes a momma proud, right?!?! And rightly so . . .
