“Orange” You Glad for Summer?

As we approach the “Dog Days of Summer” around these parts, we thought we’d share a “cool down treat” that even the youngest of chefs can participate in making. This post is in conjunction with Nap-Time Creations’ Summer Fun Series – a series devoted to FUN…in the summer…while keeping your children active. Sounds….FUN…doesn’t it??

Summer Fun Series

And while it is H.O.T. down south {and in many other areas of the world}, this treat is sure to hit the spot whenever your summer comes!!

Our nieces LOVE ice cream…all shapes, forms, and fashions. That is L. O. V. E. {with loads of EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!} LOVE. So, after a coworker made homemade orange sherbet the other day, we decided we would introduce the making of homemade ice cream to the girls.

And, since they are 4 and 2…..it needed to be “easy breezy”, but enough to allow each of them to feel a part of the process. If you have some little helpers in the kitchen, you may want to try it out!!

Besides the ice cream maker and some ice, you will need:

6 cans of Sunkist

8 oz, sweetened condensed milk

OR….if you want to go an even easier route, just pour in a 2 liter bottle of Sunkist!

As for the actual recipe??

Easy – Breezy, 2 Ingredient Orange Sherbet

Pour Sunkist cans into ice cream canister.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet16

Stir.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet12

Pour some more Sunkist cans into container.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet17

Stir some more {one can never stir too much, right?}.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet9

Add 8 oz. of sweetened condensed milk.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet7

Pour any remaining cans of Sunkist.

Stir a final time, and close the lid.

*This is an excellent time to begin working on the word: PATIENCE!

2IngredientOrangeSherbet5

Add ice {and rock salt} between ice cream canister and barrel.

Start your ice cream machine….

{Would you say someone is “over dramatic”, much??}

2IngredientOrangeSherbet11

And wait.

While we had some ideas on how to pass the time while the sherbet was being made, the nieces had another idea – jump off the porch {maybe 1.5 feet off the ground} … over, and over, and over again! Round and round and round they went!!

2IngredientOrangeSherbet14

They worked up quite an appetite by the time the sherbet was ready for eating, and truly enjoyed the fruits of their labor.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet18

A new vocabulary word was even learned in the process – “dainty” {as referred to EA’s bites of sherbet}.

2IngredientOrangeSherbet6

While CL never quite mastered that term, she sure did enjoy devouring her sherbet!

2IngredientOrangeSherbet3

As for plans to make more sherbet?? YOU BET!! But, next time the request has been made for CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM!  Yuuummmmm, we can’t wait!
