Sewing Lessons for Children: THE TAGGIE BLANKET

Earlier this year, EA expressed an interest in sewing. Well, maybe we should say – earlier this year, EA was given the opportunity to sew {she had been asking for quite some time!}.

So, a few “lessons” were given. EA loved experimenting with the machine, its features, etc. and really had no desire to make a creation.

Sewing Lessons for Children: THE TAGGIE BLANKET

UNTIL….a “need” was discovered.

You see, our youngest niece, LG, has discovered TAGS!!

Sewing Lessons for Children: THE TAGGIE BLANKET

And, EA has noticed. Coupled with the fact “Sister Momma” has “lost” the button blanket {think: choking hazard} EA made when LG was born…..so a project was born!

Sewing Lessons for Children: THE TAGGIE BLANKET

EA would make a blanket with tags – LOTS of tags!

Sewing Lessons for Children: THE TAGGIE BLANKET

We began by cutting two 12″ square pieces from an old blanket.

EA selected various ribbons and ric rac from our stash. She then cut each one {with CAREFUL supervision} into 3 inch strips and placed them in the order she wanted them around one of the blanket’s 12″ squares – facing inward. *Do you see the side with a pattern?? That was planned.

Ashley glued one side of these strips down to the right side of the square, and Emily folded and glued the other edge of the ribbon to the first side after it dried. If you’d rather not glue, wonder tape would work as well.

Then, the ribbons were sandwiched between the 12″ squares right sides together and pinned. EA stitched around the square, using a 1/4″ seam, and leaving a 3″ opening on one side {for flipping the blanket…and tags…right side out}.

The creation was pressed thoroughly, and Ashley went back around the blanket with an edgestitch to finish it {and close the opening} while EA removed the pins that held the opening closed.

ELATED doesn’t even skim the surface of EA’s PRIDE in making this blanket for LG. She was BEAMING!!!

Sewing Lessons for Children: THE TAGGIE BLANKET

This creation was “Sister Momma” approved, and is sure to be a well loved blanket of LG’s for many months to come…although it’s kind of hard to see that love in the final picture…

I just sewed one of these yesterday for my two year old. He lost one of his “mimis” and couldn’t live without a replica. Guess I should have let his sisters make it for him…maybe they can try it out and make one for Luke! They love to sew anything and everything they can get their hands on:)

What adorable little nieces you have! A taggy blanket seems like a great project for little seamstresses!

How lovely. Very clever to use fabric glue and avoid too many pins. It’s gorgeous that she made it for her little sister, and what a happy recipient she is!!
