Brooklyn Pattern Co., Franklin Dress {Kid Approved}

Olga, from Kid Approved, is here to give you her “Flipped Creation”
for the Brooklyn Pattern Company, Franklin Dress.

*******************************************************************

 Hi, I am Olga from Kid Approved. I am here to present my version of The Franklin dress by Brooklyn Pattern Company. It was exciting to see it as the pattern to flip, since I love the style of the dress. It is comfortable, child friendly, stylish and unique. It reminds me of Japanese patterns that are so popular today.

The pattern was a pleasure to flip, it is very well done. All the notches and markings are present, so you can easily have your imagination run wild.

I wanted to make a version of a button down dress, but have more of a casual approach to it.

It’s hard to see in the pictures, but I added decorative hand-stitching along the neckline. I was quite pleased with myself, until I remembered where this is going. You know, on the blog where stunning embroidery is displayed quite often. Gulp.

I eliminated the front yoke, changed pin tucks into pleats and added a placket with buttons. The belt and belt loops were added as well. I replaced the casing for elastic on the sleeves with cuffs.

The blue gingham fabric came from my stash. I love the weight of it, it’s lightweight without being see through. It is also soft and drapes nicely.

I also eliminated gathers in the back for a more fitted look. I cut the back yoke, the cuffs, the belt loops and the front button placket on bias to add more interest.

I am very pleased with the results and highly recommend the pattern. Ania loves her new dress and got quite a few compliments during the photoshoot. She learned to casually say, “Well, my mom made it.” and finds it hilarious that people are surprised. She thinks everybody knows how to sew.

Thank you so much to the masterminds of Flip this Pattern and the creative minds behind Frances Suzanne for inviting me to participate! I had a blast!

Oh this is lovely! I love gingham cut on the bias, it’s that little detail which is so beautiful. This is just such a lovely simple dress, and so clever to ‘flip’ it like this, because it’s such a good pattern, it’s quite hard to think how to change it. You’ve ‘flipped’ it enough, without it being too much. And your photos! So great! I’m not surprised you ended up talking to people in the street!

oh that gingham is beautiful! and your photo shoot is amazing with the city streets in the background. The flip into a buttoned shirt dress is a fabulous idea. And nice details of the belt loops and cuffed sleeves. You definitely flipped a good pattern into a pretty outfit for your pretty girl.
