Between her sweet speech, “where’d Emmy doe?” and her being a “tandy torn” for Halloween, her aloofness and an occasional bursting into the fight song of her daddy’s team arch rival {ahem}…she keeps us in stitches.
And while this child definitely doesn’t need any spicing up, it just felt appropriate to give her pajamas a little bit of pizazz. In our last post, we listed several goals for the girls’ pajamas. On the other hand, Sister Momma only had one request, “it would probably be good if CL had leggings with hers”. Okay. Consider it D.O.N.E.
The pattern we used for the leggings was the Oliver + S, Playtime Leggings, sewn in a size 2. Choosing the fabric for these was difficult to say the least.
We looked at stripes, as well as polka dots in various and asunder combinations.
Decisions, decisions.
But, in the end, we chose to complete our first order from Spoonflower. Expensive goodness! The only bad news was it wasn’t quite the red we had been envisioning; the good news was it matched the KAM snaps we had ordered perfectly.
For the tunic portion, we used the Oliver + S, Class Picnic Blouse, sewn in an 18 month size in blue flannel. We added piping by interfacing the knit used for the leggings. Previously, we had added length to a picnic blouse, but hopefully this time we did it more accurately using the “slice and spread” method that we learned in Liesl’s pattern alteration class.
After adding length, we wanted to create a “statement piece” by incorporating a large Christmas tree on the blouse. When you are lacking in the embroidery machine department, what better way to do it than reverse applique?
We LOVE this technique, although we still hold our breath when we cut into the dress! Katy, of no big dill, gives an extremely thorough tutorial here if you ever want to try your hand at it! And, about those KAM snaps matching. . .they worked perfectly for the ornaments on the “statement tree”!
Two down. . .one more to go . . .for the precious {HAPPY} baby that you hardly ever get see. . .
LOVE IT! She is precious! (I’ve got a soft spot for those “middles.” They keep life interesting, that’s for sure!) The pattern on the leggings is perfect, and I really like the look of the reverse appliqué and KAM snap ornaments. How’s the quality of the spoonflower fabric?
We could write a book of quotes with that child!! Hmmm, we might not be the ones to ask about quality {since we are kind of clueless with knits :)}. It DID feel really good … disappointed with the color, but it worked out in the end!
We were thinking alike with flannel + the picnic blouse for pjs. Love the tree! I have not seen reverse applique at the hem like that before. These are almost too cute for pjs!!
Yes, we were thinking alike!! As for the reverse applique, we left some of the blue flannel at the base of the tunic {for stability purposes}, but that was hemmed so it appeared the tree went to the hem line.
Years after first hearing of it, I still love reverse applique…. as long as the edges are prettily finished, like yours! I like the KAM snap ornaments too. =)
Those are some cute leggings too. I haven’t used any fabric from Spoonflower yet, but I love the concept.
Nice

Thanks, Charity! Spoonflower was a splurge, but definitely a site we’d use again {so many fabrics, so little time :)}…
