Dear My Kids, Trendy Unisex Pea Coat {Edith and Eloise}

Angie, from Edith and Eloise, is here to give you her “Flipped Creation”
for the Dear My Kids, Trendy Unisex Pea Coat.

*******************************************************************

Hello everyone!

I am super excited to share my flip of the Trendy Unisex Pea Coat pattern by Dear My Kids. This isn’t my first time sewing a coat for my daughter but it WAS the first time sewing a coat out of faux leather! I knew exactly what I was going to make the second I saw the coat pattern – a Moto Jacket, of course! I wanted to make my daughter one last year but never got around to it, so this was the perfect opportunity to mark that off my to-do list.

Here are the things I changed…
Dear My Kids, Trendy Unisex Pea Coat {flipped by: Edith and Eloise}

Front panel pieces
– moved the neckline edge over and angled it in for the asymmetrical moto jacket look.
– segmented front panel pieces to allow the addition of the princess seams.
– segmented the top of the front panel shoulder and added it to the back shoulder piece.
– Took off several inches of overall width.

Back panel piece:
– segmented the top portion and added the shoulder piece from the front.

Sleeve Piece:
– shaved off .75″ from the top of the sleeve and curved it down to the edges.
Basically I measured the curve of my coat arm opening (after I reduced the width) and made sure the sleeve curve was the same measurement. :)

Collar Piece:
– removed .5″ from the width of the collar, along the outside edge.

Other adjustments:
– eliminated the wrist band pattern piece.
– added a band along the bottom.
– added zippers to sleeves & front.
– added snaps.
– added a loop to the inside back & pleated the inside lining in the middle (purely decorative).

I made a muslin first to test the fit and then began cutting the faux leather. I used Challis for the lining which worked beautifully. The faux leather was relatively easy to sew with but top stitching the bottom band was tricky to get the layers perfectly lined up because I couldn’t use pins without perforating the fabric. I used quilting clamps to hold it in place as best I could but sadly, still wasn’t enough to keep the topstitching for the bottom band from being a little wonky on the inside of the jacket. It drives me crazy every time I see that part but I doubt my daughter cares so probably need to let that go. haha. 😉

I considered added gussets behind the sleeve zippers but decided I liked it better without..

I hope you enjoyed seeing how I flipped this pattern as much as I enjoyed sewing it. Thanks again to Ashley & Emily for asking me to join in as a competitor.

Such a cool coat, Angie! I love the zippers in the front and in the sleeves, and the combination with the pink scarve. And that lining stunning! She’s going to look so cool on her motorcycle! (You’re going to buy her one now, right? :-))

Wow, Angie, this is so impressive! What a total change from the original pattern. I love the asymmetrical zip..and the cuff zips. What a lucky girl! And, yes, she definitely needs a motorcycle now! x
