Hey there! I’m Sarah from The Crazy Tailor here with my flip of the Boardwalk! I’ve made this pattern as is before here and another flip here, so it was a fun challenge to turn it upside-down and make it new!
I started off by figuring out how I wanted to do my color-blocking. This pattern is great for that since there are a few pieces to the original shirt pattern, but I flip-flopped between a few combos until I finally settled on this. I did the contrast yoke in the back, and instead of doing the front the same, I blocked out the shoulders into a faux-raglan style by making them match the back yoke. Adding different blocks of color is easy – just draw a line on the pattern piece, cut apart, and then trace the pieces adding seam allowance to the cut edges of both pieces. Then you have your new pattern pieces! I also merged the front yoke piece with the bottom, simply by overlapping the pieces by the seam allowance x 2 (1″ total). That gave me the pattern piece for the teal colored knit.
It’s still winter here in Northern Alberta (so jealous of the outdoor photos that I see!) but I knew I wanted to make something cute for the hot summer days ahead. I made it sleeveless and instead just cut a knit binding at 80% of the armhole circumference and sewed that on after my side seams were sewn up. I made it dress length by extending the shirt pattern down and with a slight flare. Then I added a casing on the outside, put some elastic in there and a drawstring. It’s a comfortable style for a little girl, but something I kind of want to wear now!
Since I didn’t do the front yoke with the button placket, I just did a regular button placket and extended it down a bit. The front light turquoise is knit, and the rest is woven, swiss dot and a cotton lace. The pattern is made for knits, but if you use a mix of both, it totally works!
It’s such an easy style, comfortable, and just a little bit dressy. J threw a sweater over for the afternoon and it looked cute like that too!
I really love how it turned out…makes me long for summer!
Thanks for reading! I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone interprets this great pattern!
Happy Sewing!
