WOW! Cute AND easy peasy! Question; Could this be done for a baby boy w/o looking too girly? I have a cousin due @ the end of the year & they wont be finding out the gender til birth! I know, WHY?!! Well, I need some non gender specific items & am fully intending to send a HUGE package of home sewed items their way. I am very close to this cousin & told him 6 months ago that his wife to be was right around the corner & closer than he thinks. NO I am not a psychic, just sort of have intuitions! Well she WAS closer than he thought & now they are expecting! BUT, what if it is a boy? Could this ADORABLE baby item that I LOVE sew much be considered non gender specific? WHEW! Long, I know. I mean considering I do NOT go all flowery & pink?! TIA & I am sew looking forward to the next post!
We might not be the ones to ask since we haven’t had a boy to sew for :)! It could possibly work depending on fabric selection, SMALL size and how you think your cousin would handle it. I don’t know if our brother-in-law’s manliness could take it, especially if it was only gender neutral and not at least more boy-esque. Another option would be to make something basic in blues, greens, etc. {maybe even solids} then add some sort of embellishment boy or girl related once the baby arrives. No matter what. . .have fun creating!
You could sew a little applique tie or bow tie to the onesie for a boy.
they sell them in the stores for boys, i love them but my kids always moved around too much and the got all twisted!
Great ideas! Thanks Frances/Suzanne & Karen!!
[…] the lace hem and bodice top! But we pieced them back together for you to get the idea. We used Frances Suzanne’s tutorial except made the sleep sacque a little shorter as they suggested. We cut the top off a long sleeve […]
What would be be smaller measurements to do the newborn gown without it being to big?
I’d say 12 inches {instead of the 1/2 yard…18 inches} would be plenty long enough for a newborn…
Can cotton woven fabric be used??
You need the knit on the top section. There are no closures, so you need it for stretch.
Was wondering how long to cut the elastic? I could’t find where it said.
It is a matter of preference . . . and how gathered you would like to make the hem. Ours were cinched, but not tight – allowing diapers to be changed easily.
