Paper Bag Dress Tutorial

PaperBagDressWORDSHi everyone!! Yesterday, we were over at iCandy Handmade sharing a tutorial for some Bubble Sacques for babies. But, as you know, onesies come in packs — and we wanted to ‘mix it up a bit’ and make another variation for our “niece in waiting”….

Today, we’d like to show you another quick {and easy} sewing project for the babies in your life… The Paper Bag Dress!

What you will need:
Onesie

1/2 yard fabric

3/4 inch elastic, cut the circumference of the onesie’s waist

coordinating thread

Begin by sewing the “paper bag” portion of the dress together.

118inchRST

Once the side seam has been sewn, it is time to hem the dress {we found it to be so much easier to do at this stage, than at the end once the elastic has been gathered at the waist area}!

6Hem1inch

7Hem3inch

**Please note: We were going for speed and ease on this project.

If you do not want this deep of a hem, use less than 1/2 yard fabric for the skirt portion!

***********************************

Moving on to the “paper bag” portion of the dress….

3FoldAgain

4TopstitchCasing

5WaterSoluble

8CutElastic

Once the “paper bag” portion of the dress is done, it is time to sew it onto the pre-made onesie.

10PinRightWrongSides 11Topstitch

**Please note: You will need to sew the above step with a zigzag stitch….since you will be sewing knit to quilting cotton.

**************************************

There you have it! We hope you’ll USE and ENJOY this quick and simple project…

*Please note: This post contains “affiliate links”, yet we do solemnly promise that all proceeds will be used to fund our fabric {and sewing} obsession!

I love it, I have a few onesies left from a gift I made before. I will have to try this!

This is really sweet… it would be even more adorable with one of the pretty embroidered onesies I sometimes see. =) I really love the fabric you used.

Just wanted to let you all know that lately your posts are only coming into my reader as a clipped post and not your full post like it used to be. I don’t know if this was intentional or not, but as a fan of your work, I really appreciate getting the full post in my RSS feed because I don’t always have time to come to the website to read it.

Thanks and hope you have a Happy Easter!

Wow – My daughter is out of onesie sizes, but she has t-shirts that still fit but are a little short on length. I think I will try this technique with one and see how it goes. Thanks for the inspiration.!
