12 Days of Christmas Party Theme {A Crafty Christmas}

When we signed up for “A Crafty Christmas,” {hosted by Emily of naptime-creations}  we thought we had a fail-safe plan: focus on food, but tie it into a favorite Christmas song.
Hence, “The 12 Days of Christmas Party” theme was born.

After searching the worldwide web to see if such a theme existed, we found some parties that were based around complete dinners – with cooked poultry delicacies as the main course. Since we didn’t want to go that route, we opted for a “snack food feast” – easy breezy for party planners, with little to no prep prior to party time! Perfect for adults and children!!

Included in this post is the “12 Days of Christmas” template design {available HERE and HERE}, as well as the swan template seen on Day 7 {image courtesy of phillipmartin.info}. Download at will, and use these images for an upcoming party of your choosing…. Just another way of making it easier for you!!

So, how about we get this party started?!?! Did you know that SIX of the twelve mentioned gifts are bird related?!?!?!  That made it quite hard for our creative juices to overcome the challenge. That said, some of these song-based foods are a s.t.r.e.t.c.h {at best}. So, if you want to take the theme a bit further, feel free to make a game of it with your guests – you know, match the food to the song….and the one with the most matches gets to go first in line, wins a prize, etc.

Also, in our brainstorming, we came up with several ‘alternative suggestions’ that we will include as we present “The 12 Days of Christmas Party.”

Day 1: Partridge in a Pear Tree {sliced pears}

Alternative: canned pears {for ease}

Day 2: Turtle Doves {turtle chocolates and dove chocolates}

Day 3: French Hens {popcorn ‘hens’}
Alternatives: French onion dip, French bread or toast

Day 4: Calling Birds {chex ‘nest’ party mix}
Alternatives: haystack ‘nests'; small fried pies; blackberries {calling birds = blackbirds}
Day 5: Golden Rings {butter cookies}
Alternatives: funyuns, peach gummy rings, doughnuts, lifesavers, onion rings, pineapple slices
Day 6: Geese a Laying {deviled ‘geese’ eggs}
Alternatives: chocolate eggs, peanut butter balls, peanut m&ms, malted milk balls
Day 7: Swans a Swimming
{swan template taped to straw….served with blue koolaid / gatorade / colored water}

Day 8: Maids a Milking {milk and syrup served with
two syrup bottles for fun – squeezing the bottles as the udders of the cow}
Alternatives: milka candy bars, milky way chocolates
Day 9: Ladies Dancing {‘spinning and twisting’ candy canes}
Alternatives: twizzlers, spiral pasta, pinwheels, braided pastries

Day 10: Lords a Leaping {‘makes your taste buds leap’ chips and salsa}
Alternatives: fireball candy, pop rocks, red hots

Day 11: Pipers Piping {sliced celery sticks, filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins}
Day 12: Drummers Drumming {oreo ‘drums’ with two pretzel ‘drumsticks’}
Alternative: large pretzel ‘drumstick’ rods dipped in white chocolate

If you have another option for party food based on the “12 Days of Christmas,” feel free to share in the comment section – the more ideas the merrier!

Finally, if you are looking for some awesome “12 Days of Christmas” tunes to continue the party theme – we prefer the traditional song, followed by an uptempo, modernized version by Relient K….it adds an element of surprise to the tried-and-true….

Be sure to stop by Naptime Creations to enter for your chance to win a $50 Etsy gift card and a bundle of Christmas goodies in conjunction with “A Crafty Christmas”!

    Hi Heather! I think we’ve updated the post so you can download the numbers….sorry about that! It is actually divided into two links – for numbers 1-6 and 7-12 (I couldn’t figure out how to combine them). If you still have difficulty, let me know and I can send them to you directly!
