Year-Round Bubble Shorts {a pattern by do guincho}

During the month of July – specifically during the Shorts on the Line sewing series – we happened upon some darling shorts that Marta, of do guincho, made for her daughters.
These shorts looked cute, comfy, fashionable, modest, and fun for an active child. So, we contacted her…asking about some specifics on how she achieved this look. And, as luck would have it, she was in the process of making her first pattern — THESE SHORTS!
Please note: one would never believe this is Marta’s first commercial pattern!! It didn’t take us long to realize in our communication with her that Marta is a perfectionist. The PDF pieces fit together perfectly – better than some established PDF companies. Not to mention, her photos and diagrams are extremely helpful….all the way down to the addition of ‘speech bubbles’ on the directions.
Awesome, huh?? So, for the next month or so, we corresponded and sewed a few of our own… This just happens to be the first pair.  {*NOTE: the pattern has changed considerably since this pair was sewn. A good deal of width was taken out of the main fabric, and the length was shortened slightly.}.
We paired the bubble shorts with the free, downloadable Oliver and S popover sundress. And, since these photos were taken, two additional inches {we had already removed two} were removed from the hemline – creating a popover sundress top.
Our niece has just begun to wear 3T in RTW clothes. Typically, she has some room to grow in that size, and Marta’s shorts were no different!
We used a striped shot cotton to make the shorts – a light, airy, lineny sort of fabric that drapes and hangs nicely – although Marta suggests various fabrics and weights for these shorts.
This pattern filled the gap nicely in our niece’s wardrobe. More often than not, we lean toward making her dresses….but technically, “play clothes” are in much higher demand these days!
As for the uses of these shorts?
They are extremely modest…but can look like a skirt at times.
They are great to run in…
They are great to relax in…
And, they are great to wear as a chef’s hat while pretending…
You just can’t go wrong, can you?!?!?

Thank you, Marta, for taking the plunge into pattern development….and helping us achieve our next look. Come back tomorrow to see a ‘flipped creation,’ using Marta’s bubble shorts as a starting point for a completely different look!!

And….did you know that for the month of September, you can take advantage of an introductory price of FOUR DOLLARS {discount code: RELEASE1} to secure this pattern for yourself!! Seriously – can it get any better?!?!

Love the look…almost like a skirt but not as sporty looking as a skort. And I love the fabric…I’ve been thinking about going back to that store to get some shot cotton.
