Mad for Plaid {PR&P season 7, week 3}

!!! WARNING !!!
**Not Suitable for Chubby Girls**
That’s what the warning read….on the pattern nonetheless….on both the front and back sides….
Politically correct??

HARDLY! So much so, we’d venture to say that phrase wasn’t even
invented / spoken / heard / understood in 1967 {pattern copyright date}.
But….even with the warning, we couldn’t help ourselves: it was a must-sew!!
So much so, we had a plan….as in….while enjoying our time at GNO: Charlotte in March,
we bought fabric and buttons for this specific pattern…to make for Winter 2014.
Project Run and Play just sped us up a bit.
BECAUSE….when the season 7 challenges were announced,
“MAD for PLAID” just happened to be one of them, and that was exactly
the type of fabric bought several months ago for this very special project.

Special? Why so? Well, we sew with cotton, and have just recently begun trying our hands at knit. However, we’ve never sewn heavyweight fabric, much less outerwear.
Truth be told: we are scared of outerwear. Not as much as swimwear, but pretty close
{although it hasn’t hindered us from buying some coat and jacket patterns}.
Then, adding to our fear of outerwear, throw in the fact we’d be sewing from a VINTAGE PATTERN!
If you’ve never sewn from a vintage pattern, that’s what we call living life on the edge…
Vintage pattern directions are just….strange weird….for lack of a better word. We’ve decided they were made for people who sew, not people who were trying/learning to sew.
Now, about that warning: Not Suitable for Chubby Girls??
According to our niece, it was completely unfounded!
Looks like someone just got a vintage-inspired plaid coat for Winter 2015.
And, for the first time in our blogging life, we can say we are finally ahead of the game!

Adorable! Adorable! Adorable!
I love when sewing plans coincide with PRP! I love the baby blue plaid. And that peter pan collar is adorable.
Great job aunties!

Isn’t that the truth?? We might have done a happy dance with being able to use a preconceived idea {with materials already bought} for a PR&P challenge!!

The coat is beautiful! Love the fabric. The pattern’s specifications cracked me up. Can you imagine if they had anything like that written on the pattern nowadays. Wow! Great job!

This is adorable! I remember noticing that plaid when you bought it… it’s so pretty. I love the style of this coat, and you did a beautiful job sewing it up. Also, politically correctness or incorrectness is, in my opinion, highly overrated. =)

Beautiful! We’ve decided vintage patterns were written for women who use to know people close to them who sewed/ had a sewing community on hand. That way they could all stand around the pattern and try to figure out what they were talking about…. -Rachel

Love it! And you’d be surprised, that will probably be perfect for winter 2014 the way kids grow. I have a very similar vintage pattern and love the dress from it as well as the coat/cape. I actually kind of like sewing with vintage patterns, because they seem more straight forward to me…maybe because I was taught sewing terminology from my mom though.

We picked the ‘best of the best’ pictures …. as far as fit goes! It is quite large!! **Good to know you like sewing with vintage patterns AND that you are on our email ‘hotline’ {watch out – we may be asking for some interpretations using these patterns}…

That fabric is lovely and you did a great job matching the plaids. She looks so cute in it! Now I’m dying to see the yellow dress look sewn :) It’s adorable.

Yes, that yellow dress is a ‘must sew’ as well….. but, based on the fit of the coat, we have a little time to pull that off {maybe in the spring :)}!

I ran into a pattern the other day that said that!! I wish all the clothing in stores were labeled that way, so I’d know what I shouldn’t wear lol!

A lovely coat!!

I love the plaid too – perfectly adorable colors & style on your niece & the coat turned out to be perfect! I’ve been sewing a few smocked dresses using patterns from the 1950’s & I hate the instructions.

Love how it turned out! Ha, and I love the warning :) They should have such warnings now–“not suitable for scrawny, chicken-legged kids!” :) (Yes, my kids are generally quite thin, and most vintage or even newer big-name patterns are just not made for my skinny kids. Unless I size down significantly!)

And, we are the world’s worst….because we’ve yet to make a muslin for our nieces!! We always say, if it’s too small for the oldest, maybe the little one will wear it eventually…if it is too big, she’ll get there eventually :)…

YUM! Definitely a ‘take’ on mint chip ice cream….. If only there were some in the house right now :)! Must eat in moderation though – we wouldn’t want someone to not heed the warning label – not suitable for chubby girls!

Elizabeth and I have loads of patterns that say “suitable for chubbies” (a phrase that we use whenever possible) but not many that say “not suitable for chubbies”. Apparently we go for the more full figured patterns! :)
