The Candy Challenge for Project Run & Play, season 7, week 2 will definitely go down as one of our most thought-expending challenges to date.
You see, we’re S.L.O.W. sewists…..and can’t justify sewing something that is costume-esque, or an outfit that can only be worn once. Instead, we had to plan an outfit that would a) fit the required challenge and b) could get many other wearings – instead of always being viewed as an oversized piece of candy.
We eventually landed on our candy inspiration:
The Reese’s Cup – one of our all-time favorites!
When it was said and done, we considered it a win-win-win for us.
It fit the PR&P challenge.
It fit the “Flip this Pattern” September pattern challenge {Pattern Anthology, Alphabet Collection}.
It fit our personal challenge of wearability for other occasions.
Most candy begins in a wrapper, so that’s where we’ll start with ours. Beginning with the Recess Raglan {see kate sew}, we ‘flipped’ it into a cardigan. Why a cardigan??
Well, you KNOW you must take off the wrapper to get to the ‘good stuff’….just like you take off a cardigan. We used the bright orange as the main fabric of choice….as a nod to the Reese’s cup wrapper.
The yellow accents of bias and cuffs were to double as the yellow print on the wrapper. Brown and yellow stacked buttons were used to replicate the design of the Reese’s text – yellow text with a brown outline.
The UNflipped Recess Raglan {see kate sew} was made in a light khaki knit – to replicate the yummy peanut butter found inside a reese cup.
What began as the W Pants {blank slate patterns}….ended as a “flipped” skirt. The back details and welt pockets remained true to Melissa’s original pattern, as well as the waistband. We used light khaki fabric on the welt pockets and piping….think of it as oozing peanut butter from the inside of the Reese’s cup.
The skirt was made to mimic an upside-down Reese’s cup….complete with ridging / edging around the entirety.
How did we achieve this look?? By sewing medium-sized cording evenly around the skirt. Okay – we were pretty pleased with this concept, and look forward to using it on other sewing endeavors in the future!
So….EA hit the ‘candy challenge jackpot’ with this one!! She now has three functional wardrobe pieces – that can be worn together or separately….all without screaming: I’M A REESE’S CUP!!!
Sister Momma is claiming ‘Halloween Costume Victory’ (of which we’ve sworn off since last year – blogged about here and here), but it is yet to be seen if we make CL a matching candy of choice!

Mr. Knit is growing on us…..so many perks to a continued relationship (quick sew, no iron, etc.)!! Rockstars?? Yeah, we are about as far from that in real life. Honestly!

I really need a Reece’s cup right now
This is great!! My husband just looked up and saw this and said he thought of Reese’s right away (before seeing the wrapper)! I’m not familiar with it being Aussie, but can see you did a great job! I love how the skirt mimics the ridges on the cup and the layered buttons too. Sweet!!
We soooooooo need to mail you a Reese cup, Suz…….you just haven’t lived yet :)! Glad it met hubby’s approval – and that he could ‘see’ the candy in our creation.
This is fantastic! the colour pick is so perfect, and the craftsmanship is so good! I’m loving the cording technique, but thinking probably is very complicated. Well done Ladies!
Not complicated at all….trust us, if we can do it – it will be a cinch for you! Fold wrong sides together, iron, place cording between wrong sides (in the crease), stitch right next to the cording, and voila!
Clever outfit! You definitely get the Reese’s cups vibe from the enitre ensemble but the pieces are still cute as individual items of clothing.:)

Any chance you’ll do a tutorial on how to make the pattern a cardigan? Love it! Never thought to stack buttons before.
We’d like to do a tutorial eventually….but since our rendition wasn’t ‘smooth sailing’, we want to try our hand at it again before advising others how to make one. **We began by looking at LBG’s yellow cardigan from PR&P season 6, first week – if you just can’t wait!

This is great guys, love your interpretation (love me some peanut butter and chocolate!) and all the details..especially the skirt. I love how it mimics pleats (or at least it seemed to..) without all the ironing involved! Sadly candy didn’t make the cut for me this week…I just don’t have time

Ha! Sometimes we OVERLY-plan before executing…… The buttons were a thought while standing in the button aisle of JoAnns, and searching for Reese’s images on our phone. Oh, and having a big discussion if it were yellow inside of brown, or vice versa….
