As Long as Someone Doesn’t Become Nocturnal…

Well, we did it. We bought some fabric on a whim {again}, and then questioned our judgment and good sense. What in the world are we going to create with this? So, the fabric sat…collected dust…and seemed to taunt us each time we delved into a new project.

Then, it happened. An idea finally came to us! Have you ever heard of Katy’s {of No Big Dill} darling series, Once Upon a Thread? If you haven’t, here’s the summation: It is a sew-along series that items are sewn based upon children’s book inspirations. Ummm, let’s just say that our children’s book addiction is equivalent to our pattern and fabric obsession!! Technically, the Once Upon a Thread series isn’t in progress right now, but we were so ready to go with our idea…

Introducing Little Hoot: A book about an owl and his bedtime.
Little Hoot was a happy little owl.
He liked going to school.
He liked playing hide-and-go seek with his forest friends.
But there was one thing Little Hoot did not like: Bedtime.
Because when you’re an owl, you have to stay up late, late, late.
So, he HAS to play for one more hour before going to bed.
“When I grow up, I’m going to let my kids go to bed as early as they want.”
Eventually, Little Hoot gets his wish and is allowed to go to bed….
and they owl lived happily ever after!

We used the Oliver + S, Sleepover Pajamas for the pants portion of the outfit.  Unfortunately, we didn’t completely follow the pattern…and thought piping would be a great idea.  If you haven’t already discovered through our blog, we think piping is the answer to any outfit! So, that hindered the whole cuff and/or ruffle. We went a little rogue, and ended up with this look at the base.

Yes, we are planning on making pajamas from this pattern again…and actually sticking to the pattern on round 2 (ie: Christmas pajamas). The top was embellished using a piece of the pajama pants fabric. It was ironed using steam-a-seam 2, and stitched in place using invisible thread. The words, “Little Hoot,” were then hand-stitched in place under the stitched owl.

Now, back to the book…

This book series by Amy Rosenthal and Jen Corace is FANTASTIC! Each book {Little Pea, Little Oink, and Little Hoot} has the opposite outcome one might think given the characters/objects used.

This project was indeed enjoyable, and “whooooo” knows??? We might just do another “Once Upon a Thread” outfit based on another one of these books…
