Typically, we would have sat our OCD selves down and brainstormed; charting out various words we would like to be our focal point for 2015. Then, we would have made the words a bit more flowery and exciting. Finally, the time would come that we would HAVE to choose only one word. . . and decisions are never our strong suit.
However, oddly enough it was almost as if our word just came to us and there was no discussion on the matter. Maybe it was because as we talked about our upcoming plans for 2015 there was a resonating theme – TEXTURE.
While we have never been known to sew with much more than cotton and an occasional knit, we are thinking about broadening our horizons with other TEXTURES! Yes…as in, possibly leather or even a tutu {gasp}. . .maybe not so far as faux fur, but we might get there. . .someday.
But, actually texture means more to us than just picking out a different fabric medium.
This year, our desire is to create our own textures using any given fabric.
Enter our Christmas gifts to each other this year.
Embroidery “old school” creates texture.
The possibilities are endless, and our minds are spinning.
What about smocking {in all of its many forms}? Definitely texturized.
What about tucks? Pleats? Various heirloom techniques used in “everyday wear”?
Each manipulation of fabric and thread gives texture.
Textures can be soft and subtle, or harsh and defined…or even somewhere in between.
Some of you may be thinking ohhhhh. . .knitting and crocheting! Definitely texturized, and definitely on our “some day” list. However, we are going to put those textures on hold for a little while longer!! That day will come…or so we’d like to think.
Granted, a lot of our “texturizing” {is that a word?} will be using good ‘ole cotton, however we would like to try out some new fabric mediums for fun!
So, inquiring minds want to know. . .do you have a favorite technique to create texture in your garments? Or a texture idea that might be fun for us to give a try? Or possibly a favorite textured, fabric type {that is decently “straight forward” to sew}?
Wow! This year is going to be better than ever. We can’t wait to see what goodness texture brings to your life! We’ve been exploring textures too. Lace is very textured. And you forgot to mention the 3D texture your ubiquitous piping brings to all your garments!
Good points about texture!! We are looking forward to the year as well, testing out some new techniques in the process….
What a great word! I can’t wait to see what you gals sew up this year. And tutus for your nieces is a fantastic idea!
Shhhh, that might be our “Handmade Valentine Gift” to them….we try to sew something for them other than clothes for Valentines Day.
I am definitely looking forward to your textural creations. =)
Jacquards usually have great texture, and there are a huge variety of fibers to choose from.
Quilted sweater knit might also be worth looking into.
I agree with Audrey that lace can add a lot of texture. Most eyelet laces are easy to work with, and if you underline a regular lace it can often be treated like a plain fabric.
Quilting is another to add texture, especially Trapunto quilting. Or, even better, Trapunto cording, which can be quite intricate and dimensional.
What a list! We will definitely have to research a few of these techniques….they are new to us!! Looking forward to a great year…
