Knock It Off…and a FLIP of Our Own!

If you are visiting from Elegance and Elephants for Heidi’s “Knock It Off” series, WELCOME!! We hope you like what you see, and stay for a while.

Modified Sis Boom, Ethan Shirt {sewn by Frances Suzanne}

Everyone else, we are continuing to prepare for August’s “Flip this Pattern” with the Sis Boom, Ethan Shirt…..WHILE “Knocking Off” a sewing inspiration in the process!!

A Win-Win for everyone!!

While browsing our pinterest board of sewing inspiration, we found this pin to kick start our “Knock It Off.”

KateQuinnOrganics

We seem to have been on an orange and white kick recently, and thankfully it is a color combination our niece has embraced!!

Knocking items off isn’t something that is natural to us….in fact, Heidi’s series really makes us WORK for a created look!! It stretches us, and gets us out of our comfort zone…in a good way {although there is a lot of holding of our breath until the finished creation is modeled / worn}. So, we appreciate Heidi pushing us and encouraging us to better ourselves and our sewing through her series.

Knocking off an item is definitely an area of our sewing we would like to improve, and be able to do with ease. Hence, our reason for taking a Sewcation later in September.

sewcation

This conference couldn’t fit our needs any better!! We are slated to attend a class on drafting various looks from one pattern {sound familiar??} and another on adding details to a garment to give it a uniquely inspired look {details? YES, YES, YES}. Both classes will be taught by THE Liesl Gibson, of Oliver and S {you can read her post about it here}. And, then there is a free lecture by Liesl that will continue along those themes.

We’ve got high expectations that this conference will alleviate some of our anxieties when completing fairly simple pattern alterations. So, brace yourself :)! We know we are….

Now, back to the specifics of our “Knock It Off”:

We began with the Sis Boom, Ethan Shirt {August’s pattern for “Flip this Pattern“} and sewed a size 3.

Our goal was to replicate this Kate Quinn Organincs Peter Pan Dress. After much searching, we could not find the retail price for this dress….but went with it nonetheless.

Modifications to the pattern included:

We added piping EVERYWHERE – collar, sleeve, dress {front and back}, hem bias, belt, and belt loops.

While adding the piping, we did not account for seam allowances – making it a more “fitted garment” than a shirt style. And, EA still has room to grow!!

We shortened the sleeves to more of a feminine style.

We DID NOT alter size of collar, but DID alter the shape of it to be a more rounded finish.

The back yoke was combined with the back shirt to make the back as one piece.

And finally, belt loops and a belt were added.

As for the Sis Boom, Ethan Shirt: This pattern is DETAILED – with LOADS of pages and diagrams!! SERIOUSLY!! There are sooooo many directions….several of which we skipped since it didn’t pertain to our finished look {sleeve placket, cuffs, darts, pocket, etc}.

We had never sewn a Sis Boom pattern before, and found ourselves pleased and surprised at the in depth nature to this pattern.

If you want to make an “off the rack” button down shirt, this is the pattern for you!!

*FYI: Currently, Sis Boom is offering a 30% discount on ALL PATTERNS {discount code: AugustFlipSale} from now through August 10.

So, there you have it: a Knock Off / Flip COMBO!!  We hope you like it as much as our niece seems to…..

I just knew this was the pin that you were flipping. Totally your style. Maybe your motto could be ‘when in doubt pipe it out’ Anyway, you totally nailed it!

How fortunate that you both are going to that conference! Enjoy it ~ I’m sure you will :)
