What’s not to love about a free pattern?
When we decided to sew Rae’s Geranium Dress for our “Celebrate the Baby” series, we wondered if we were the only ones who had taken advantage of this teeny-tiny bit of loveliness. So, we posed the question on IG and were shocked {and relieved} that we weren’t the only ones!
This pattern is very basic and is a quick sew! It would be perfect to use for a baby shower gift and can be made dressy or casual. We made two minor modifications: 1) we added piping and 2) we eliminated the pocket. With two “not so big” sisters around that just looked like it might cause problems.
Another great thing about this pattern is that it only requires 2/3 yard of fabric, so we were able to use some remnant fabric we had from another creation. Not as exciting as it could have been, but it felt good to put some “leftovers” to good use.
While we went very simple and basic, this pattern truly is a ‘blank slate’ and there are so many details you could add to ‘make it all your own’. Some ideas I’d like to try would be top-stitching several rows around the hem; adding flutter sleeves; embroidery; lace edging with a ‘dressy’ fabric; tucks on the bodice; a sash that ties in the front. . .the possibilities are endless!
My only complaint {if you can call it that} is that I wish Rae had included the buttonhole placement (markings for the buttons were shown) and which side to sew them on. Maybe that is more of a suggestion. . .not a complaint. . .I mean it is free for crying out loud, right?!
I believe I’ve sewn up over a dozen of these so far, little baby dresses for charity. They are really great for using up smaller pieces of fabric from my stash. That’s true it is a good blank slate pattern, never thought of that!
Charity sewing: that’s a great idea! And, yes – yes – yes on using small pieces of fabric for it….PERFECT!
So cute! I must sew this for my little one. She is now 1 week old. Only if I can find the free time!
Ooohhhh, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I bet your free time is minimal / nonexistent now!!!
I really love the fabric for this! Not as fun to use as fresh new fabric maybe, but perfectly dainty for a little baby. The piping makes it perfect. =)
And I love this pattern! I only made one before my baby grew right out of it, but it’s just so darling! I wish I’d eliminated the pockets… my middle daughter couldn’t keep her hands out of them.
Glad to know we made a good decision about the pockets…..we were concerned what might find their way into the pockets :)!!
