May “Flip this Pattern”: Flipped Creation Four

Ana Sofia, from S is for Sewing, is here to give you her “Flipped Creation”
for the Cottage Mama, Run-Around Romper.
************************************************************************

Today, it’s my turn to share with you my version of the Run Around Romper by The Cottage Mama.

Thank you Emily and Ashley for inviting me :)

The Run Around Romper was one of the patterns that caught my eyes when Emily and Ashley presented the patterns selected for this series – Lindsay’s patterns are extremely well-written and it’s always a pleasure to follow her detailed instructions.

Adding to the above was the fact that I’ve always wanted to sew a romper for my girl – It might be because I didn’t manage to sew one when my boys were younger or maybe I just love the overall “romper” concept: an easy-fitting comfy piece of clothing that is perfect to play around and still looks good enough at the end of the day (fingers crossed, obviously).

Obviously, a Flip means you do have to alter the original pattern and hopefully that’s what I managed to do :)

My goal was to keep the “romper concept” (sorry, I know it’s a Flip, but I really wanted to sew a romper …), remove the babyish-details (large straps, wider legs and body section) and end up with flipped-romper that my 6-years old girl would love to wear on a daily basis – school, playground, etc.

Sounds simple, right?

I used the front and back bodice as guides and slimmed them down quite a bit (my girl wears a size 6 and the flip version might be closer to a size 3), the armhole section was also redrafted and I’ve included new front and back bodices.

Also, the shoulder straps were altered (slimmer, straighter and closer to overall-style straps) and shoulder ruffles were added (sorry, these were truly needed. They look so cute!).

As for the fabric and trim options, I chose a large floral (Tanya Whelan) and 3 different trims: a smaller white and taupe trim for the shoulder ruffles, and a combo of 2 different lace trims for the front bodice (one red and one taupe on top).

The leg pieces were also trimmed for a fitted style and the length was kept above the knee.

This flipped version is not fully-lined like the original pattern so I attached a leg band to the shorts – I was going to add a bow, but my girl was not impressed with the idea (and she’s the one wearing the romper, right?).

I was quite impressed with the (unintentional) fussy cutting of the fabric at the front. Looks so great :)

The fit is great on my girl (in my humble opinion), but I did get some requests for making it shorter …

Well, you can’t have it all, right?

Don’t worry, she loves it and this will be a very-loved (and worn) flip creation.

Thank you Ashley and Emily for inviting me!

Hope you love my flip as much as we do!!
