Well, she’s done it again!! Liesl, the mastermind behind Liesl and Co. and the founder of Oliver and S children’s clothing patterns, has once again hit the nail on the head in designing her latest patterns.
While we felt as if her past patterns had covered the gamut of children’s sewing spectrum, she has seemed to fill a hole – not readily seen by us – in her pattern line….creating a layette set for the babies and toddlers in your life!
The Lullaby Layette Set is a perfect mix-and-match sort of pattern….allowing sewists the option to do as many {or few} of available pieces, as well as giving the opportunity for interchangeable attire. Perfect for a little one of your own, or endless possibilities for baby shower gifts {boy or girl} in the future.
Included in this set are four patterns – bodysuit, shirt, pants, and reversible jacket – in six sizes. Since it is a “two scissor” sew, it isn’t a daunting task for sewists and is one that is completely achievable in a short time frame.
Although knits may be used for the main fabrics, Liesl recommends lightweight woven fabrics for the bodysuit placket and bias binding for the jacket bias binding.

For this Lullaby Layette set, we chose to only sew the pants and shirt for CL. Although CL is 20 months old, her weight fell into the 12 – 18 month category, and her height was in the 18 – 24 month range. So, we opted to sew the 12 – 18 month for each piece, but lengthened the pants to an 18 – 24 month length. **Hindsight: this additional length wasn’t necessary, given the generous fit of the layette set.
There were several things we LOVED about this set of directions.
First and foremost: there were EXPLICIT, bold directions drawing one’s attention to very important / key words. We definitely utilized these directions as we constructed the placket on the shirt. The placket wasn’t like any we had sewn before, and as we read through the directions, we might {or might not} have had a tinge of “Placket Panic.” Symptoms included, but were not limited to: heart palpitations, sweaty palms, and a feeling of intimidation. How did it all turn out for us?? With a “Perfect Placket”, and no major snafus along the way …
Next, we LOVED how Liesl told us when to finish the seams throughout the pattern! We typically find ourselves so caught up in following the step-by-step instructions, that we forget some of the most basic steps — if they aren’t specifically mentioned to do.

What was our favorite part about the two pieces sewn?? The seam placement on the pants…hands down. The seam placement is so interesting – not directly on the side, but towards the front of the garment…showcasing the lines of the pattern. We just HAD TO accentuate it with piping, of course.
As for some slight alterations we made to the Lullaby Layette Set?
*added bias binding to the sleeve hem
*added buttons on placket {dressing it up, but not necessarily recommended}
*color blocked and piped the back pocket area
*piped pants’ “side” seams
*lengthened pants
Stay tuned…because next week we will find out the gender of “Baby Three.” Whatever the case, be it a NIECE or NEPHEW in our sewing future…rest assured, there will be many sweet lullabies in the days and weeks to come! Either way…boy or girl…the Lullaby Layette Set is sure to fit the bill!

I was about this close to get this pattern yesterday (and I don’t even have a baby to sew for) and now I’m considering it again – It’s lovely and I reckon this style will be pretty timeless!

Could you please tell me, do you think there is ample room for cloth diapering as is, or would I need to make adjustments? TIA
While we don’t have any experience with cloth diapers, my gut says there is ample room for them. We sewed our niece the 12-18 month size (she’s 20 months) and the fit is very generous. I’ll be interested to hear how it works, because I know this has been a hot topic of discussion on the forum!

So glad that you two have reviewed this new pattern. I love your honest – not to say, brutal – approach to the whole business of sewing/reading patterns/instructions, and your review is encouraging. I’m very much looking forward to working with the Lullaby; previous attempts at ‘baby’ clothes have been rather hit and miss because commercial patterns can be very complicated, and ‘Book’ patterns too general. I have no babies to sew for but those placket instructions have me intrigued. I’ll probably have to have this pattern after all.
While we’ve not sewn ALL the Oliver and S patterns, this placket was definitely different than any we had sewn previously…..it was a neat construction concept!! There are always baby gifts that you could use this pattern for :)….

Do you think one could use buttons instead of poppers? I really don’t like poppers.
Absolutely, Nicole!! We used small buttons on the placket {instead of snaps} with no change to the pattern pieces. I think it would depend on personal preference, and possibly the age of the child??
