Time flies when you’re having fun…..errrrr, recuperating!! Project Run and Play has come and gone,
our sewing area has gotten back to a semi-sense of normalcy,
and our lives have begun to slow down as well.
Then, last week….we checked the calendar and realized: “GUEST POST ALERT!” Eek!!
Back to the sewing machine we went…..for the first time since completing our “Signature Style” earlier this month. The hiatus was nice…..really nice….and really fast!
When Shelly contacted us to be on the Figgy’s Heavenly Collection Winter 2014 Tour,
we knew we wanted to be a part of it!
First and foremost: Shelly is amazing!! We worked with her during October’s Flip this Pattern series,
using her Sunki Dress, Tunic, and Leggings as an inspirational springboard for flipped pieces.
She didn’t “know us,” yet she jumped in…..and played an active part during her month of flips!!
That meant the world to us!!
Secondly, we knew we wanted to participate in this tour because many of the Figgy’s Heavenly Collection were sewn with knits. Now, let it be known that we claim ZERO PROFICIENCY in sewing knits,
but would like to become more adept in sewing knits in the months ahead.
What a perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves to do just that!
That said, we opted to sew three patterns from the Heavenly Collection – all, basic knit pieces that are sure to get lots of wear from our nieces…. We chose to sew each, using upcycled materials. Again, something we would like to become better at incorporating in our 2014 sewing.
First: The Celestial Pullover

First: The Celestial Pullover
Using Grandaddy’s knit shirt {the one that housed $11 in our PR&P upcycle search}, we sewed EA a Celestial Pullover. She couldn’t keep her hands off her sister’s cowl a few weeks ago,
so we opted to make her an outfit with a cowl as well.
“Sister Momma’s” red/orange knit top was the source of our inspiration, as we created a color-blocked Celestial Tee for EA. We hadn’t intended to sew a color-blocked version of this tee, but fabric yardage shortages made us go this route on the garment. The pleated front section of the tee is very sweet, and we see ourselves making many more of these for our nieces in the years ahead.
We had bought a couple of xxl hoodies from Old Navy {$1.99 each} when we first considered
delving into sewing with knits. So, we used one of the hoodies as the main fabric, and added
a small pop of pink knit given to us for the pocket accent and neckband.
All of these patterns are PERFECT for the “Knit Beginner Sewist.” Each one is a basic pattern,
with minimal pattern pieces, and easy-to-follow / sequential instructions.
We are thrilled to have these in our ‘knit pattern collection’ and plan on using them as
we incorporate more knit sewing for our nieces in the years to come.
At this post’s release date….
NONE of these garments have been tried on / modeled / etc. {due to weather and family illness}
so we have no information on the fit. We sewed the 4/5 size for all the pieces,
and look forward to trying them on EA in the near future!
The Ethereal Dress didn’t quite make our sewing deadline, but we plan to make one for CL in the near future. Wouldn’t it be too, too cute…..paired with some fun leggings….as we enter the spring months!?!?

I love that you are diving into knit-sewing. so much fun! and the garments are sure to be worn a lot…
regarding the rafflecopter question: i think the stellar tunic is fun. i’d love to combine knit and woven fabric
YES!! Knits definitely have their place in one’s wardrobe….so, we must improve in this area of our sewing!! We know our sister will LOVE the wash and wear ease….

That dress pattern looks like one I would use over and over. I like the fact that these are basic patterns that you can use in some many ways.

Raglan tee
I am in love with knits! Sew fun to make usable wearable clothes! I like the ethereal dress alot, don’t have anything like that in my patterns!

I’ve been to chicken to sew with knits. Great job on all of these shirts, my favorite is the gray and pink one.
Hey….if we can do it, you definitely can!! These would all be great ‘starter’ patterns as you dive into sewing with knits….

That one ended up our favorite of the three sewn as well…..and it was really an ‘after thought’ on the color combination, etc. A pop of pink on the sleeve hems would be a neat addition too, but we ran out of time on that component :).
I have a couple but my next will be the maxi skirt.

Ummmm, you might want to check with Shelly on that…..bless her :)! She had to ‘field’ two questions along the way – while sick in bed!! And, we still refer to your helpful suggestions as we sew along….

I really like the Ethereal Dress….I’m interested to see the sizing on your niece. Also, you need to come up with another term for your sister other than “Sister Momma” – every time I hear it, I think “Sister Wives”…..I’m just sayin’!!!!
We think the garments might be a bit large…..but hey, it means we’re ahead on our sewing. We’ll let you know though once EA tries them on! Hmmmm….”Sister Momma”…….we’re open for suggestions :). Never seen “Sister Wives”…..

The Ethereal dress is gorgeous! I’m also in love with your raglan tee…you guys always do so great with those little details like the pop of pink. I would love to get better with knits, but my sewing machine doesn’t like them too much. It eats knits and elastic!!
