January “Flip this Pattern”: Flipped Creation Four

Cindy, from Siestas & Sewing, is here to give you her “Flipped Creation”
for the Clever Charlotte, Chickadee Blouse and Skirt.

I love to tinker with patterns and come up with new looks. There are so many ways to change things up! When it came time to “flip” the Clever Charlotte Chickadee pattern, I knew I wanted to keep the unique details that were already there….the off set collar and the faux-wrap skirt. Originally, I planned on making a dress. But when it came time to pull fabric from my stash, the corduroy print I chose begged to be made into separates.  My flip has 4 pieces, all made using the Clever Charlotte Chickadee pattern.

I turned the Chickadee blouse into a fully lined jacket that can be worn with the coordinating skirt(s) or over a t-shirt and jeans.  The lining is a slick acetate that makes putting on and taking off the jacket super easy. The jacket has piping across the front and back seam lines and around the off set collar to highlight those features and to break up the print. The jacket closes with 2 loops/buttons on the yoke.  The loops were made using FOE (fold over elastic) cut in half.

The skirt is actually 2 skirts…an over skirt made with the original pattern pieces, albeit a little shorter, and an underskirt with an elastic waist made using two of the back pattern pieces.  The underskirt has several rows of pleated quilting cotton sewn on it to add some texture and depth to the skirt.

There are 4 wooden buttons down the front of the skirt.  The top one is fully functional and gives BK a bit more room to get the skirt on and off.  Even though the back of the over skirt has button hole elastic, it’s still a bit hard for her to pull on and off.  The other three buttons are sewn in place with light blue silk thread.

The final piece of my flip is a t-shirt.  By joining the back pattern pieces of the blouse and eliminating the pleat, I was able to create a basic block.  The front is the same pattern piece but with a slightly lower neckline.

The t-shirt has a loose fitting, boxy shape that’s easy to wear.  It would make a great sweatshirt sewn out of a sweatshirt fleece or french terry fabric!

Here’s a quick recap of the changes that I made to flip the Clever Charlotte Chickadee Blouse + Skirt pattern:

Flip CC Collage
1. Functional button closure at waist, 2. Pleated underskirt, 3. T-shirt, 4. Fully lined jacket, 5. Piping around offset collar and yoke seam lines

Thank you, Emily and Ashley, for inviting me to participate in your fabulous series!  And thank you, Carla and Erin, for the darling Chickadee pattern.:)  I had a lot of fun playing with the pattern and coming up with my flip.  Cheers!
