Black Ice & a Guardian ‘Snow’ Angel {PR&P: Winter Wonderland}

Today is the day!! Project Run and Play’s Winter Wonderland looks are revealed…

This competition is set up to stretch one’s sewing skill-set, design, and creativity.
And, trust us: We’ve been stretched in all those aspects…already!
Voting remains open through Thursday evening, so make sure to go check out the competition and vote for your favorite creation of the six entries.
Wanting a little more information about our looks?? Here goes…but, consider yourself warned!
Lots of pictures… Lots of information…

Black Ice & a Guardian Snow Angel

While we dream of a winter wonderland, filled with peaceful, serene snow scenes, our reality is that of black ice, occasional spitting snow, and lots of prayers as Southerners attempt to drive in wintry conditions. Thus, our vision for “Winter Wonderland” was born.

Black Ice {EA’s Velvet Dress}
Our starting point was the Children’s Corner, Lee {sz 3}.

Modifications / Detailing included:
The skirt width was decreased by 33%.
The sleeves were redrafted to long sleeves with 1” cuff.
Lace was then added as an accent between the cuff and sleeve.
The peter pan collar was replaced with a tatted lace edging around the neck.
Two rows of smocking were omitted, and the back yoke and skirt were adjusted accordingly.
Two smocking plates were combined {Australian Smocking and Embroidery, Issue 46 “Quiet Corner” pillow and Australian Smocking and Embroidery, Issue 57 “Eternal Treasure”} to make a new plate. Pearl accents were added to match our ‘vision.’
Black sateen piping was added between the yoke and skirt to give the garment a more finished look.
Snow Layered Coat {EA’s Coat}

Our starting points were Maggie’s Classics, Infant and Toddler Coat and Bonnet #355 and Collars,Etc the Princess Dress and Coat

Modifications / Detailing included:
The front pieces of Maggie’s Classics #355 were completely redrafted and reworked to look more like Collars, Etc.

The front portion of the coat was divided into a front section and side panels, each separated by princess seams of black sateen piping.

Excess width was removed from smocked / inverted pleat on the front section of Maggie’s Classics #355.

Side panels were widened slightly to accommodate for removed width from smocking / inverted pleat.

The back belt was then widened and piped, spreading buttons / buttonholes apart.

Finally, the coat hem was lengthened to cover the “Black Ice Dress” length and the lining’s length was adjusted accordingly.
Guardian ‘Snow’ Angel {CL’s Dress}
Our starting point was the Children’s Corner, Rose {sz 1}.
Modifications / Detailing included:
Pearl trim was added along the rounded yoke.
The dress was lengthened.
Sleeves were modified to not include elastic in the finishing of each.

Guardian ‘Snow’ Cape {CL’s Cape}
Our starting point was the Oliver and S, Little Things to Sew: Red Riding Hood Cape.
Modifications / Detailing included:
The hood was eliminated.
Seams were sewn at 5/8″, instead of ½” {sizing the cape down to fit our young niece}.

The hemline was shortened by 2.5”, and pocket openings were adjusted to accommodate a smaller child.

White piping was added between each cape section for a more finished look.

And, there you have it:
Black Ice & a Guardian ‘Snow’ Angel
Tomorrow’s post will be a little more “Behind the Scenes” action from this week’s challenge.

What was the hardest aspect of the look?
What did we dread/put off completing?
Any surprises come up along the way?
Who got the biggest “GOOF” for the week?

This post was so much fun to read! You all did a beautiful job of interpreting our winter weather here in the South! Everything about both outfits is perfect, but my favorite is EA’s little mint dress and cape. Now, please tell me you didn’t make a trip to Textiles and not call me?!

These looks are timeless and your skill is amazing! You actually struck a personal chord for me. Your smocked dress made me remember my very favorite dress from when I was in 1st grade! The one I begged my mother to let me wear every day because I loved it so! It was not black, but it was a light aqua blue, very similar in color to your other precious dress. So, nice job and thanks for the memory!

    That’s great!! In my first grade picture, I was wearing a small floral print dress with geometric smocking….and two pigtails {my hairstyle of choice back then}. Glad to stir up those memories for you…..

I’m so glad I clicked over to see the details close-up…and of course you didn’t disappoint! SO very well done. Although I was a little surprised as I read not to see any O+S patterns :)…but found it at the very end in the cape!

Simply lovely! Perfect for an Alabama winter :) The black on black dress is stunning. I can’t get over that smocking. My daughter is almost too old for smocked dresses but she may need something like this! Love the whole look. Good luck with PR&P!

Absolutely beautiful sewing. the black dress is stunning, and I agree with Irene combining smocking plates makes no sense to me and sounds scary! Well done.
It also took me almost to the end to realise the snow was fake! Great photoshoot.

    Thanks Karen….we liked the path we chose for our theme. Smocking was little different {and a risk} for PR&P…..so we’ll see how it is accepted!
