And Then She Was Three….

Happy Monday, everyone….or maybe we should say, “Happy month of October!” Since this IS {embarrassingly} the first blog post of the month from us. We apologize, we apologize, we apologize. However, what better day than the first day of KCW, Fall 2013 to make a grand appearance?!?!?
It really isn’t from a lack of sewing. Seriously! But, after keeping the girls two weekends recently, surviving a three year old birthday party, and taking bunches of photos in the process…well, let’s just say the blogging component of it all has been pushed to the back.

That said, we do have several outfits done, photographed, and ready to share – once we pause long enough to write about each.
Which leads us to this post: EA’s BIRTHDAY POST! A very special girl turned THREE YEARS OLD this month!!  And, had a water party to celebrate…
As much as we’d like to freeze time {as these girls are from the chill of October’s water}, this baby is growing up….and way too fast!
Of course, a birthday can’t go by without a little reflection of EA’s current interests/activities. {And, if you want to read about her first two years, you can do so here}.

EA’s newfound interests lie in pretend play and dress-up clothes. Currently, her favorite pretend play settings are the beach {count us in for that one} and a bear den {?? who knows ??}.
Dress-up clothes have been a big hit as well. She’s always loved trying on clothes, but this has definitely peaked her interest to a whole new level.

Now, EA had given us specific directions regarding her birthday: NO CLOTHES. Humorous…because she is always asking us what we are making / who it is for. We can only guess she doesn’t consider it ‘birthday material’ when it is such a common occurrence. Truth be told, she is 100% correct: the child doesn’t need any new clothes.

But, we had a plan! And we were excited about it. Enter: EA’s very own experiment smock…
Using the Oliver and S, Little Things to Sew: Bias-Trimmed Apron,
we made EA a smock {paired with some Oliver and S, Playtime Leggings} specifically for ‘messy experiments.’
You see, she has a history of ‘experimenting.’ But when we did further research on the matter, she seemed to do much of it topless {the photo below was the only one we could find that covered the child…}. Something had to be done about this situation!
And, since we went against someone’s specific instructions….
what kind of reaction did we receive?
We put it to the test…trying to make a believer out of her!
She painted…
She planned…
She glued….
And, she created “SILLY MONSTERS” for the season.
Her entire family was represented, all the way down to the dog!
While that was great, EA still wasn’t convinced…what else could she do in this garment?
How about a little cooking?
Ummmm, we had her from the word, CHOCOLATE!
So, the verdict was: YES, YES, YES! She loved it….and will use it…
as she discovers more and more about the world around her!
And, as an added bonus: It was discovered you can even JUMP in it!!
Who could ask for more??
We hope you all ‘jump for joy’ as you complete your sewing projects this KCW: Fall 2013!!
We can’t wait to see what you’ve got in the works through the course of the week!

Happy birthday! Great way to get around the no clothes edict! The apron is still on my list of projects to make and you’ve made a lovely one! (are you going to join the LTTS challenge Flickr pool? http://www.flickr.com/groups/2334038@N24/)

I love the fabric – do you remember the source?

Absolutely!! We should have included that in our post. It was Textile Fabrics, out of Nashville, TN. {textilefabricstore.com}. I believe it was a cotton laminate.

Hooray for Birthdays!
Did you approach sewing oilcloth (is that what is is?) differently than regular fabric?

I think it was a cotton laminate…instead of oilcloth. Not 100% on that, but it is less shiny than what we think oilcloth would be like. We didn’t approach it differently, although we couldn’t mark a thing on it….due to the wipe-off ability of the fabric.

Cuuute! Love the in-action photos. =)
My girls could definitely use some experimenting aprons too… I don’t like to think about how many shirts they have ruined already. =/

Happy Birthday, dear little one! Turning 3 is a big deal, after all “3 is a magic number”. 😉 Love the apron…perfect for messy experiments and cooking!

My Bella really needs a smock like that . How difficult was it to work with the cotton laminate. You girls did a beautiful job. It does not look handmade.

I was pleasantly surprised at how easily it came together! Most of the long seams were sewn wrong sides together and then covered with bias which really simplified things. Go for it!
