September “Flip this Pattern”: Flipped Creation Two

Shannon, from Little Kids Grow, is here to give you her “Flipped Creation”
for the Pattern Anthology {Alphabet Collection} Study Hall Jacket by The Train to Crazy.
************************************************************************

With fall right around the corner, I was really excited to play around with the Study Hall Jacket. It’s such a fun, casual jacket. I thought it would be nice to flip it into something with a bit more structure that could be worn with anything from jeans and a t-shirt to slacks and a tie.
What I kept in: I wanted to keep the defining features of the jacket, so I kept the raglan sleeves, welt pocket, and ribbing, but I switched things up a bit to make things interesting.
Here’s a look at my sketch process. My original design was similar to the Study Hall Jacket except for the side closure and missing hood.  The jacket shape was still round and the ribbing was in the same place. My second sketch was a lot closer to what I envisioned.
Original Study Hall Jacket
Once I had the second sketch as a starting point, I was ready to create.
To Start: The first thing I did was slim and lengthen the silhouette. I added about 3 inches to the length of the jacket and took about an inch off of each side.
Jacket Front: I moved the jacket opening from center front and replaced the zipper with a single-button side closure. I wanted to keep the ribbing without the “casual look”, so I relocated it from the jacket and sleeve hemlines and instead, used the ribbing to add visual interest and texture. I kept the hood, but created a collar stand to make it “stand up” off of the neck.
Jacket Back: I divided the pattern pieces into thirds and created a back panel and vent with a contrasting color.
Interior: I removed the welt pockets from the front of the jacket and placed a “hidden” pocket on the inside of the jacket instead.

Fabrics: Heavy Corduroy (exterior) Rib Knit, and 100% Cotton (lining)

Flipping this pattern was a challenge, but I loved it!
************************************************************************
“Flip this Pattern” voting will begin on Friday, September 20 and run through Sunday, September 22.
Stay tuned for more “Flips” coming your way….every Thursday….between now and then!
And, in the meantime, link up your “Flipped Pattern” and be inspired by others sewing along!

Shannon you’ve outdone yourself! I would never have thought to use ribbing as a contrast band, but it makes the jacket so unique and visually interesting. Your collar stand is great as usual (I think I first really understood collar stands after reading one of your posts) and changes the hood just enough to be worn with something formal. I love the final look :)

Thank you, Ajaire! I think I’m going through a “collar stand” phase. LOL

Your details are so great Shannon. The design is so handsome and unique. The venting in the back is so cool without shouting.
