Mie, from Sewing Like Mad, is here to give you her “Flipped Creation”

Hi Frances Suzanne readers. You have no idea how much I have been looking forward to Flip This Pattern. I love the idea and concept and I am very honored to be invited to play along. So far the series has certainly not disappointed, right?!
If you follow my blog, you will know that I LOVE everything An from Straight Grain makes and I had no doubt which month to pick when I saw that her new pattern Tinny was the pattern for August. That I am up against regular blogging super stars….hmmm yeah….bummer!
But you know miracles do happen…..these photos are for sure an example of a miracle light (as in not hard core life changing but you know pretty surprising).
We started with photos like this:

……..but then we actually ended up with something like this:
Okay, okay I did say miracle light alright!
My camera even ran out of battery in the end so I did not even know if I had gotten anything that worked until hours later when it was recharged. Phew!
Let’s get on and talk about the dress, shall we!
I need to talk about my inspiration for this flip first because that is a bit of a one-thing-takes-to-another story.
As soon as I got the invitation and chose Tinny of course I started to think about how to ‘flip’ it. And actually kind of immediately I thought of this knit dress that I made for my youngest daughter last year (which turned out to be, and still is, one of her favorite dresses).
So I totally wanted to do that pintuck tuxedo style front yoke. So far so good!
And when I received the pattern from An (she generously gave it to all four August participants, thank you An!), I was reminded that there was a wavy collar option which made me think of a dress I made for my very last collection from 2007 that also had that wavy collar plus a rounded front yoke with buttons.
The dress you see above is one I made myself a couple of years back in baby corduroy using the pattern from my 2007 collection. I am sorry it has been washed quite a few times and does not exactly look crisp and new even though I did iron it right before the photo shoot. (Where do I pick up my medal?)
Oh well, there you have my inspiration for the rounded front yoke that continues and takes a bit of the front waistband. (It is a bit hard to see on my dress since both yoke and waistband are in the same grey fabric – I guess you just have to take my word for it.)
And also my reason for using one of the original Tinny features, the wavy collar, even though I was supposed to ‘flip’ it – the coincidence was simply too funny to not keep it.
Overall, I did keep the general shape of the original Tinny dress. That just made the most sense to me personally (Please don’t misunderstand – I don’t think it is wrong to totally change the composition from the original – I am only talking about what I personally wanted to do!)
So what changes did I do beside the ones I already talked about:
The skirt is flared but not full – more like half a circle.
I added side pockets and a contrast waistband that I think creates a very balanced look to these type of dresses.
The sleeves got a bit of puff like my own dress.
And then we have the niceness details:
The sleeves and skirt are hemmed with bias tape, the collar/neck seam is covered with a narrow bias tape and the collar got a contrast piping. All were made from the same crisp cotton skirting fabric that the pintuck front yoke was made of. The mint fabric is a thin cotton twill and the collar and waistband is a blue medium weight denim.
Okay, I think I said what needed to be said about this ‘flip’, don’t you?!

The wavy collar is on our ‘must sew’ list that is growing by the minute!! Nicely done – I’d call it a ‘double flip’…..flipping An’s Tinny dress into a similar outfit previously created!
Wow that will be my first completed acrobatic trick! I am way to clumsy and scared for the real thing. Sewing a double flip THAT is more my style 😉

Mie this is so great. I love your attention to detail. What a fabulous design youcame up with.I like that the skirt isn’t too full and the set in waistband detail.its sort of like a really cute and crazy school uniform. And as usual, I love your writing style and sense of humor.
