MADE: for Portrait and Play

A special welcome to all you “Shorts on the Line” fanatics! We are thrilled to share with you two different versions of a soon-to-be released shorts pattern by Dana {MADE}.

When we first saw a sneak peek of Dana’s newest pattern via instagram, we immediately recognized the endless possibilities! The pattern has boy and girl shorts versions, each with the option of flat front or entirely elasticized waist. Past that, it is up to you to choose your embellishments: bias to create racer shorts, front pockets, or back pockets.

Our goal for our shorts guest post: DIVERSITY using ONE PATTERN. That said, we chose to sew a dressy, as well as a casual “beach look” using the same pattern! Did we succeed? We’ll let you be the judge of that…

For EA, we chose to sew a dressy beach look, using striped linen and couple of sweet buttons we found at JoAnn’s.

Is it possible for a fabric to scream at you even if it is in pastel colors? Well, this fabric did!
The light blue reminded us of the ocean, while the cream coloring reflected the sand.
Since we were going for more of a dressy look,
we sewed the shorts with the flat front option and added the front pockets.
To make the pockets ‘subtly’ pop, we turned the stripes horizontally
and incorporated our “go to” detail – piping!
Ahhhhh. . .and absolutely loved the results!
For CL, we chose a casual beach look, using terry cloth and white bias tape
{also a JoAnn’s purchase}.
Let’s just say, we are on the lookout for some cheap fun towels
to make some more of these fun comfies very, very soon!
On this version, we opted to have the waist entirely elasticized
and then incorporated white bias tape for racer shorts.
Oh, and don’t forget the back pocket!
We were in love!
Two ENTIRELY different looks using one simple pattern!
FOR PORTRAIT….
AND PLAY…

Dana’s pattern was unlike any we’ve had the opportunity to test before. You see, she has a plethora of tutorials on her blog. She uses these online tutorials as the backbone to guide you through sewing your shorts using the pattern pieces provided. Her tutorials were spot on and thorough, VERY thorough. I racked my brain to give her feedback, any feedback past the fact that we LOVED this pattern :)!

So….what did we think of Dana’s Shorts Pattern {MADE}?
* It was an easy pattern to follow.
* The instructions were wonderful {and referenced applicable tutorials throughout}.
* Each pair came together quite quickly.
* The fit/s were appropriate {and forgiving}, and were manageable for us to complete – even without having the girls available to try on throughout the sewing process.

As luck would have it, the pattern is in the final stages of being released! So close, in fact, there still may be time once it is released, to sew a pair with your own twist and enter them in the “Shorts on the Line” Flickr group for your chance to win all sorts of fabulous prizes!

And, FYI: any and all shorts are welcomed in the “Shorts on the Line” Flickr pool. So, for all you “Flip this Pattern” sew-along friends….link up those Elegance & Elephants Bubble Pocket shorts and enter them in the “Shorts on the Line” contest too in order double your chances of winning!

In case you’ve missed it, here is the line-up of “Shorts on the Line” guests that have shared…or will be sharing…in the upcoming days. Caila is sharing some shorts as well today, so be sure to go and check out her ‘take’ on this series!

As for us and our ‘photo shoot,’ there may or may not have been some strange looks being shot our way as we tried to photograph the two nieces together……Ummmm, one child looks dressed for the occasion, and the other … not so much.

We call that, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
Interested in knowing more about the girls’ coordinating tops?
Stay tuned, because we’ll be sharing those details in the next couple of days!
So, what do you think? Which look suits you best?
Would you go for a portrait or casual look using this pattern??
We look forward to seeing your ‘take’ on these “Shorts on the Line” in the very near future….

I’d go for BOTH looks!;) Super cute! The terry outfit is very retro looking…reminds me a lot of what I wore in the summer in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

So cute and just adorable on your sweet nieces. My fav is the more dressy version but the easy wash and wear of the terry version will have these worn over and over. Great job, ladies!

Just the other day I bought that same linen in green and pink thinking it would make the cutest shorts. And it does! Thanks for the motivation. I really need to get my daughter some made.
