Have you heard? The ever amazing An, of StraightGrain, has recently completed designing her second pattern, the Tinny! And what’s even more exciting {for us anyway} is that we were given the opportunity to pattern test this beauty.
For us indecisive gals, the most difficult part of the Tinny was choosing between the myriad of options available – 4 collars {peter pan, asymmetrical, open and butterfly}, 3 skirts {circle, gathered, pleated} and 2 sleeve {tulip, notched} options – wowza!
Our ‘go to’ collar {aka: “Miss Peter Pan”} actually hit the bottom of the barrel this time because we wanted to have a bit of fun! It was tempting to just flip a coin to decide between the other three collars. Heaven forbid, we play favorites.
Out of the 24 possible combinations, we ended up choosing the asymmetrical collar with the circle skirt and notched sleeves.
Rumor had it the circle skirt would make us the BEST. AUNTS. EV-AH. But, hindsight tells us it might not really count if you are the only aunts. Oh well.
It was a tad painful not to choose the tulip sleeves since we’d never sewn them before, but we felt that the corners of the collar lended themselves to the notched sleeve more than the curved sleeve….just the excuse we need to sew up another dress in the days and weeks to come!
The pattern calls for an invisible zipper, which gave me the hibee-jeeves. Sewing zippers was one of our reSEWlutions, and while I had painfully attempted two of them, this one actually was sewn without using the seam ripper even once!
Success? Well, at least it was a step in the right direction. Lining up the floral patterning was far from perfect, but I had a functional zipper and the pattern was busy enough that on a “running hyena” I doubt anyone will take a second glance! That’s what I’m saying to reassure myself anyway.
Since I am a math nerd, and love a sweet deal too. . .the Tinny can be sewn 24 different ways {that’s one pattern, in one size, my friends}. But, wait, there is more, An has drafted this pattern from 12 months to 6 years {7 different sizes} – making 168 different patterns all in one, all for $8.
That wears you out just thinking about it, doesn’t it???
So, let me see, that means that each pattern option cost a tad less than a NICKEL {and that doesn’t take into account various fabric combinations either}!
Now, if that’s not a sweet deal, I don’t know what is! And that is before An is celebrating her new release with a promotional bargain: releasing the pattern for $7 …. for the next four days. Our niece claims it is time to do a “Happy Dance” with news as good as this!
Speaking of 168 options, somewhere at the utmost peak of creativity….there is bound to be even more! Stay tuned because coming in August as part of our “Flip this Pattern” series four designers {and a multitude of sew-along friends} are certain to come up with a twist, making the Tinny all their own!

Your photographs and commentary are always so delightful! The dress is charming with the circle skirt and the sweet collar… but that child! Oh, my! She is just so adorable!
