Well, here we are. We’ve taken the ‘blogging leap’ and jumped in feet first. After mulling it over, talking through the process, and thinking about the possibilities, we’re here. “How is the blogging water?” you might ask. Hmmm….right now, I’d describe it as: cold, murky, and definitely foreign. So, what does one write about on the first post?? I thought it best to start from the beginning …. where I’d like to say it all began….
Rewind three decades (plus a few more years for good measure): Three daughters, dressed in their Sunday best, thanks to a loving mother who sewed stitched many of their outfits by hand (note: individual pictures above). Yes, that’s us! Ashley {frances}, Sara (the nieces’ momma), and me – Emily {suzanne}. How she found the time, patience, energy, or effort is beyond us….but she did, and that is where the ‘seed of creation’ emerged. Truth be told, our parents ‘double teamed’ us on the ‘seeds of creation’….dad now offers an opinion and creative insight with our projects through his experience with watercolor and woodworking hobbies.
Fast-forward to the school years. What did we cultivate with those seeds of creation? Potholders were our go-to, staple Christmas craft gift; then, came the years of cross-stitching. Family and friends humored us as we showered them with more potholders than a generation of relatives could possibly go through.
College came and went, and Ashley {frances} found herself working part-time in a local children’s boutique fabric store. Thus began “The Smocking Years.” We would smock an item, and then send it off for construction – a genetic ‘fear of the sewing machine’ we inherited from our mother. During this time, we also took a heirloom embroidery and construction class. Of which, *side note: I’ve yet to complete the project I began – you may see it yet on a future blog post. Getting the cart before the horse?? By all means!

Long story, short: 1. The children’s fabric store closed. 2. We bought LOTS of fabric, buttons, lace, smocking plates, etc. on sale. 3. We organized the future outfits into storage bins. 4. We closed the bins.
Obviously that isn’t the end of the story or I wouldn’t be here…writing our first blog entry. Merely, it is a stopping point to this one…..a time when we went into a long ‘sewing hibernation’ before reemerging to present day.
[…] {suzanne} and I ended up choosing some fabric from our fabric stash of “way back when.” Then, once I was brave enough to attempt my first three scissors project, I hit the ground running. […]
