Summer 2011 = End of “Sewing Hibernation.” Yes, we did a few projects in our 5-6 year slumber, but nothing consistently. Our niece was 8 months old, and we were ready to hit the sewing world full-throttle. But, we were clueless…..still. We needed H.E.L.P! Enter….our Jedi Master.

Whether people want to admit it or not, everyone needs a Jedi Master: someone who will listen to you, share your excitement, offer words of wisdom/advice, never laugh at you (unless, of course, you are laughing at yourself), encourage, and stick with you through thick and thin. A mentor of sorts….Ours happened quite naturally – a lady from our church who sewed for her adorable grandchildren – stepped to the plate. Chelle had her expertise in place, and was willing to share/help us.
In the summer of 2011, we went to her house for 4 purposes: 1. Share what we had created. 2. Leave a few items for her to ‘spruce’ up and appliqué/monogram. 3. See her sewing room. 4. Glean any information / help she could provide in sewing, organizing, patterns available, fabric selection, etc. Wow, we had a ways to go….and looking back, we can just shake our heads and laugh!
Before the unveiling of our creations, let me preface this by saying: We were so proud of them….and remember, it is summer in the South. Drumroll please…..

Yes – corduroy. In our defense, we just didn’t know if we could finish items in a timely fashion. So, obviously, we allowed six months of leeway. Most of the fall, we worked backwards adding to our niece’s wardrobe for the season we were actually in…But that’s not all. Brace yourself….

EEK! There is nothing right about these dresses. Truthfully. Satin ribbon? Fully lined? I mean, really!?!? We attempted to dispose of them this past spring, but mom salvaged them. And, no…our niece hasn’t worn them because we made them 2-3 sizes too big. You know, to prepare for our slow sewing and need for time…
Still, our Jedi Master didn’t laugh or judge. She gave suggestions and shared our enthusiasm for sewing. So, we stick to our guns: Everyone needs a Jedi Master. Obviously, they come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Maybe you are picturing your Jedi Master right now. Or, maybe you are THE Jedi Master to someone. If so, we applaud you! Jedi Masters are what keeps the art of sewing alive and well…We’d love to hear the story about you and your Jedi Master!
